Hey JB,
When you do a commission of 11" X 17" do you use regular comic boards? If
so what do you use for the 20" X 30" pictures?

Regarding the "requirement" of only posting nice things about John
Byrne's artwork here, I agree with the majority. There's no such
requirement. The fact that the views on the artwork are
overwhelmingly positive spring from two very obvious sources: this is a
John Byrne fan forum, and John Byrne is a very good comic book
artist. It's not unsurprising that the praise may seem overly
skewed, but what would one expect.
Regarding the criticisms of this particular commission, I suppose this
is how I look at it: have at it all you like, but remember, while this
is a public forum, the owner of the forum is here pretty much all the
time. I might be down on someone for the work they produce, but
I'd never dream of pointing out my perceived flaws in the work while
the person is around to hear it. I think it's just impolite to do
so in the presence of the creator of the work. I mean, what
exactly is the point of airing out one's grievances of this commission
in public, exactly? I can't imagine it would be with the
intention to start a meaningful dialogue.
There's absolutely no reason why these private commissions should be
posted to this forum. While I might see little things here and
there I might not like in a couple of them, I'm just very appreciative
of the fact that I get to see them at all.

Andrew H, I agree. Well put! I also count myself lucky to see these things. Every time I see one of these drawings, I feel like a kid again. It's that "Wow!" factor. I can't help but think how excited I would have been, at age fourteen or fifiteen, to see new work by JB hot off the drawing board (so to speak). I really get a buzz out of it.

SMP - I totally feel the same way. I will be honest, and say I
count myself in among those fans who think (as much as I hate to say
it) that the "old stuff was better", though in saying that I'm not
exactly sure why. I look at John's second stint on She Hulk and
don't find much to love about the artwork, and that was, what, 13 years
or so ago? A lot of what he's done in the last five years has
been far better than that work. I think it's a case of not loving
the books he's been on recently, more than a decline in love for the
actual artwork itself - but I'm digressing a little. IN SPITE of
what I just said, I too get the same feeling looking at these
commissions that I did anticipating buying the next issue of X-Men and
FF many years ago.
Hmm. I was going to say something else, prompted by my reading of
an electronic copy of the recent Byrne Modern Masters - emailed to me
by a friend, in case anyone does the Donald Sutherland pointing thing
at me - but it's gone now. Something about John's desire to work
only on big titles because the ones he's chosen recently don't seem to
be working out. I'm paraphrasing, perhaps inaccurately.

Personally, I think both versions would make a unique and inherently valuable collector's piece if someone wanted take both commissions and frame them side-by-side...*hint, hint*
