Why is it that Captain America's costume is cool, but seemingly every other patriotic costume just looks terrible? Is Cap's costume actually "cool," or am I just used to seeing it all the time?

I'm kind of digging the early Cap costume with the vertical red and white bars on the front only. Very Gil Kane-ish! I don't like the blue-edged sheild though.

Cap's costume is cool.....depending on who is drawing it. I hate the way a lot of artists draw it as if it is scalemail nowadays. The seams on the mask and the utility pouches on the belt, I can live with, but the scalemail look is awful.

The only other patriotic costume I've ever seen that I think looks good is the original Shield's, and he actually pre-dates Cap.

(I don't count Wonder Woman's costume as patriotic, per se, even though its supposed to be, as it wouldn't be if you removed the stars from the trunks)

In regards to "Flag" Costumes, I'd guess that it's because it's really hard to do a Flag costume without evoking Captain America. Any other character that has one is inviting comparison whether they want to or not. These poor guys/gals are can't do it the same because Cap's a trademark and all the other guys just look "wrong" because their costume isn'tCap's.

Just an uneducated guess.

It's a pretty simple design and one we are all familier with. Some patriotic costume tend to go overbboard with symbols.

I didn't think that Steel's costume (JLA) was too bad.  And my all time favorite patriotic costume belongs to Guardian (formerly Vindicator).

You beat me to The Shield, Brian.  I've always liked his costume, too.

And let's not forget about this guy...

Absolutely the best patriotic costume of all time is Guardian's.

(Due to the confluence of the symmetry of the Canadian flag and John
Byrne's genius notion to treat the left side of his body as a centre-line to
reflect that symmetry. Simple, clean, dynamic: a great flag design begets a
great costume design.)

Guardian's costume is great. It doesn't beat you in the face that its a Canadian flag. I agree.

William, it would be interesting to know whether Cap's "merry go round"
stripes, as older fans who disliked the change called them, were the result of
a design decision by Kirby, or if he simply forgot that the original costume
had no stripes on the back.

When Jim Steranko took over Captain America, I had recently seen some
late-forties CA Comics, where the outer stripe on Cap's shield was colored
blue, and I liked it. Knowing that Jim colored his own work, I suggested he
return to that version. Jim rejected my suggestion, and said he thought that
I would come around to his point of view. He was right. A blue stripe
makes no sense in terms of evoking the flag.

Union Jack is my favorite patriotic costume, followed closely by Captain Britain's 2nd costume.  If we're talking purely about American patriotic costumes, Captain America's really is the standard by which most others are judged.

Robert...its hard to tell with those early golden age comics. It could literally change from story to story within the same issue. The 'no stripe back' only lasted a short time...mabye like an issue or so, if i remember correctly.

I do like the retro Golden Age Union Jack costume...the new ones don't do much for me. Good call.
