I wouldn't venture to mindread but it did certainly seem that once JB left,* Mr. Claremont pretty quickly wasn't much concerned with preserving the Cyclops that had been for so many decades (and was very nearly my favorite character, definitely my favorite of the X-Men).

*[And even pre-JB, he gave Cyclops a space pirate father...]

My main complaint—mentioned many times before—is that Chris and I would burn up the transcontinental telephone wires for hours (at Marvel’s expense) working out the most microscopic twists and turns of our tales, often months in advance. Then Chris would script something else, and major plot/character points were lost.

These came to be known as my “ARGH Moments”, and there was pretty much one per issue.

Came the day the ARGH Moment was on the first page, I decided that it was time for me to leave.

EDIT: Erased question that was asked and answered years ago-- only I forgot.

Instead, may I ask, how did you usually learn what the final product of each issue's collaboration with Chris was?

When I started this thread 17 (!) years ago I had no idea it would take on a life of it's own, literally.

I think back to those days and it was like watching magic, these stories were some of the best since the early Marvel Lee/Kirby/Ditko days.

But, and it's a big but, I'm saddened by the stories we never got to see

The Sabertooth/Wolverine/Mariko story
The Red Skull/ Captain America trilogy

But we got JB taking on the FF, my favorite comic of all time.

So it's cool.

All pretty interesting behind the scenes stuff. My first JB X-Men purchase
was 138 and while I’ve since found copies or reprints of a lot of the stories
touched on in it, I still visually think of most of those stories through John’s
dynamic single panel recreations / interpretations of famous scenes
displayed in 138!   Given your obviously strong ability to visualize these
often intricate sequences, I was curious if issue 138 was a particular
challenge in that much of it involved these tricky and involved art reference
recreations. Sometimes you make it look so easy I’m not sure I appreciate
the painstaking attention to detail required. To me it seems like 138 should
have been an incredible bear of an issue to draw; was wondering what
memories you have of your process on it. Thanks.

I met JB’s X-Men in Rampage, a UK black & white monthly reprint magazine
(still have them).
When I started to manage to buy American issues on a regular basis, the
fist issue was 144. I was well annoyed. We were in the throes of the Hellfire
Club (not sure which issue), but this was how I found out JB had left (I had
just reached the age where I understood different artists & JB was one of
my favourites, alongside Perez & Bolland).
Hunting those back issues was a real pain, but I managed to get from 136 to
143 eventually.
