Bah, what does Byrne know about Wolverine? This one is all wrong: short, ugly, curved claws, wearing costume....

How I wish Marvel had the guts to approach JB again and let us see him tackle again the characters he draws better than anyone else out there.

Great Wolverine drawing, JB.

JB, how do you picture the cutting edge of the claws?  It seems that, over time, his claws have come to be drawn as blades... a sharp tip and a knife-like edge running from the inside base to the end.

***

Back when I was drawing UNCANNY, I saw the claws as having basically a D shaped profile, curve on top, tapering to an almost infinitely fine point. This would have made them, being indestructible, fine for stabbing or slashing -- especially slashing against other metals.

The change didn't really occur "over time", either. It was Frank Miller, in the WOLVERINE miniseries, who decided to draw them as little Samurai swords -- Frank was in his ninja period -- even tho I pointed out to him at the time that doing so put the cutting surface on top of the blade, meaning Logan's slashing movements would have to be backhanded for the blades to work. Other artists realized this too, I guess, as the blades took on a V profile, with the sharp edge down -- but no longer looking like claws. (What was amusing there, to me, was that the less they looked like claws, the more Chris' long-rejected notion that they were a natural part of his body -- "biological adamantium"!! -- came into vogue.)

The expression on his face almost makes it look like he's got just the middle claw of his right hand out, if you know what I mean :)

Beautiful piece.

He also looks like a guy you wouldn't want to be around too much. I hate the "mentor" Logan stuff. Wolverine's a mean guy. He's got rage issues. He's like the mean drunk uncle of the MU. The only thing he has to impart is "keep your distance". Leave it to the man who made Wolverine popular to get him right.
