Is there a market for it?

Actually, it's interesting that you use Archie in your example, because there _is_ (or at least was) an alternate Archie published by Christian comics group Spire Comics.

On the issue of the covers grabbing your attention.
What really got me excited about those covers was that there were words on it. Not just word balloons but and actual teaser like:

"Can it be true? Lois marrying a gorilla instead of Superman?"

I couldn't find a gorilla so here's the next closest thing

Dear JB-
when did it become the norm to have huge editorial summits concerning the direction for 'the Batman Line of Comics'? and such...

I looked thru my Batman/'Tec's from '84-present, and it's so evident right before the Knightfall story that they ignore all character traits inherent within the books forever, just to propel the 'need' for the drastic change.

A shame, because Moench was always a favorite Batwriter, and Kelley Jones is a quality artist in my eyes.

I noticed I dropped the books in '95, and picked them back up in '00 when Chiarello showed up.  ( I know, he's an art guy, but I loved the new look)

I'm currently reading one of those phonebook-sized compilations I got from my library featuring the early "Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen" adventures. Although only about one-third of the way through (it's amazing how much text they cram into an 8-page story, I love it!), so far my two favorites are "Jimmy Olsen, Crooner," in which he basically becomes Sinatra and gets rescued by Superman from a crowd of bobbysoxers who are chasing him (in a scene that immediately brings to mind "A Hard Day's Night," though it came first by about 10 years); and "The Disappearance of Superman," in which the Man of Steel goes missing for several days and must ultimately be rescued by Jimmy from a mine filled with kryptonite (while he's away, meanwhile, Lois gets preggers, writes an editorial renouncing him, and...oh, wait, I think I have my plots confused).

In the Shazam! feature in World's Finest 268 (1979) written by E. Nelson
Bridwell, Captain Nazi sneaked food from his prison tray so that he could
combine the food additives to make him a flying gas that he breathed so
that he could escape over the prison walls.

It was entry-level comics for me and I never thought anything about it - it's
a comic book for gosh sakes! I expect that to happen!

Well... was I the only one who thought Cherry Poptart was in a kind of Archie style?

But that's beside the point, as it was Cherry Poptart and not Archie - now if Archie finally nailed Veronica... well, that would be another story...

And let me go one further - how do we know he's not poking both those dames, and that idiot with the crown hat, too?  He's just doing it off-page.  When asked why there wasn't a constant orgy on the Isle of Gilligan, some bright spark on the cast (Bob Denver hisself, maybe?) noted that we only saw them for a half-hour a week, and that, in fact, they were screwing themselves scrawny the other 6 days and 23 and a half hours a week.

I'm just saying...

and that idiot with the crown hat

Jughead!
He was always eating burgers, shakes, and the like. I think he was
meant to be a charicature of the whole going-nowhere stoner
persona.

That's the guy!  He probably became that, but weren't all those Archie guys created in like, the 30s?

A few years ago when I was running that bookstore, I had an employee who wore a Jughead hat.   Crazy kids these days!

I'm getting a stealth-trolll vibe from this guy.

=====================

Why don't you just let him have a conversation and don't accuse him of being a troll until he acts like one.

Are you this much of a drama queen in real life?

Patrick, based on the short encounter I had with Joe in Ohio, I got the impression he's a pretty nice guy.

Having said that, I do think we're a little hard on new folk here - living up to the negative stereotypes and all...

BUT, having said THAT, I think it's a typical reaction for people in our situation - for as long as Byrne has been on the internet, there have been people with nothing better to do than cause some sort of trouble - I think Joe may be over-reacting, but then again, I can't blame him - it would be like if you got mugged a few times, you'd start getting jumpy when walking past dark alleys.

Plus, you lose any "high road" points when you called him a "drama queen".

Ray Earles: Do you think all comics should be appropriate for all ages? Why hold comics to this standard and not other forms?

----------------------

That's not what I'm saying, I'm holding mainstream superhero titles to a certain standard, or would like to.  I read comics that are meant for adults, and those are fine, Y the Last Man isn't something I'd want to go away, nor is any Vertigo title, whether I read them or not.  Regarding having multiple iterations currently of Spider-Man, that is more a symptom of the problem than a solution.  The whole reason the Ultimate line was created was to get rid of all the baggage of the Marvel universe, and have a younger Spider-Man, etc.  If they'd let the "regular" line remain what it was before they decided Peter was in his 30s, say around 1985 (still in college, struggling for cash, etc etc), then there wouldn't have been a need for a second version.
