The Legion has the same problem. Science Fiction has its followers, and I
count myself as one of them, but I would not want a steady diet of
science fiction set only in the 30th Century. Every so often I need
something I can connect to more directly. The Legion rarely provides this.
Fine, for people who like that sort of thing. But not really a foundation on
which a long-standing franchise could be built.

Well, their adventures have been going on regularly for 43 years and have
titles their own series after they pushed Superboy out in 1979. For one
year they even had two books a month, The Legion of Super-Heroes and
Tales of the Legion of Super-Heroes.

They have been the subject of 12 DC Archives, and according to my LCS
owner they are the best-selling.

They've had four spin-off series - Valor, Karate Kid, L.E.G.I.O.N. & the
Wanderers, and several mini-series - Secrets of the Legion, Timber Wolf,
Legionnaires 3, Cosmic Boy. In the 1970s they ranked high enough to
have two DC Tabloids.

They've had innumerable games, toys, Legion rings, t-shirts, posters,
trade paperback collections, etc.

They have had, in my opinion, the largest and best organized fan
community and fanzine.

They've appeared in both the Batman and Justice League animated series
and now are getting a TV series of their own.

I think that's a pretty good long-standing franchise, in my opinion. Sure
the comic sales today are weak compared to the past, but isn't that true
for all comic titles?

My father's greatest exposure to comics as a kid was a big box of Superboy comics given to him by a family friend, so he read a lot of Legion stories, and when I was little he would often tell me about them, and especially about the Substitutes (Dad is a comedian, so he glommed on to the goofier stuff).

As such, I love the more oddball Legionaires, especially Bouncing Boy and the Subs.

A while back, my father wrote a very moving poem about the substitute legion -- about how every kid hopes to be a superhero, but worries he'll be doomed to be an also-ran.

According to Comics Continuum, SuperBOY is now SuperMAN in the upcoming Legion cartoon.  I would guess this is a result of the recent legal wranglings with the Siegel family and DC.

Well, that changes the character dynamics ever so slightly...

However, the character could still be in his mid-to-late teens. Frankly, that makes more sense to me than someone that age -- especially someone with Superman's powers -- calling himself *Superboy*.

I can't say for sure but I think Superboy stopped being around Peter Pan age (13-14 at the most) during the late '60s when there was a need to appeal to the teens reading Marvel comics, so you got an older Robin (the *teen* wonder) and older Teen Titans.

I fell in love with the whole concept of the Legi—n since I in elementary school, even played the Legion with some friends after school.

I miss the old -younger- Legion.
