I never had to order any Sea Monkeys from the comics.  Oddly enough, my brother and I were able to catch them from mud puddles at my Grandfather’s farm after a good rain.  We didn’t realize that what we had was being sold as Sea Monkeys until a friend actually ordered some from the comics and we saw what he had.

I’ve always wondered about them being at the farm.  There must have been a pond or something at that location many decades ago.

I had these as a kid - in the little plastic aquarium - and they were lots of fun. Never did 'train' them to do anything, but they were fun.

I had some sea monkeys when I was a kid.

Add a little salt... pretty tasty.

Yeah, I got the sea monkeys.  Little critters came in a little sealed envelope, like a handi-wipe, which you tore open and poured into the water in a little plastic aquarium.  It was cool to see the powder "turn into life," but those wee beasties never grew near as big as the smiling family in the photo.  An even bigger disappointment was the "working submarine," which turned out to be cardboard, not working, and even less a submarine.  Biggest disappointment of all, however, was the "Build Your Own Monster," which turned out not to be the raw materials to build a Frankenstein or robot to rule the world, but incredibly sketchy and vague blueprints for a robot that consisted of a very bad drawing with scratchy dimensions and really ambiguous instructions.  Anyone trying to take over the world via robots would do better to study the designs of ROG 2000 or any number of other fine JB specimens, which are infinitely more plausible and aesthetically pleasing.

My greatest disappointment as a child ordering crap from the ads pages (including my own sets of Sea Monkeys) was the Spider-Man wrist mounted web shooter.  I actually thought I would be able to go out in the backyard, aim my wrists at the trees and power poles, fire off my very own top-secret web fluid and swing through the air like Spider-Man...

I probably didn't sleep while waiting for the package to arrive in the mail.  When it did, I eagerly tore into it and was ready to go on my great adventures...

I was disappointed to find it was a plastic suction-cup tipped dart launcher, attached to a cheap fabric wristband.

I was like seven or eight years old.  Cut me some slack.

YES! I had the very same experience back when I was roughly eight or nine. Ordered mine from one of those old "Heroes World" ads that used to run in Marvel Comics. I even had it all planned out: first, the webshooters, then, dust off my old Ben Cooper Spider-Man costume and then...look out, world! here comes the Amazing Spider-Boy! Imagine my disapointment when I opened the package to discover...
 one truly crappy toy.

I can imagine kids are just as dissapointed these days with the web-
shooters that just shoot...silly string.

Since we are on the subject of toys that always mislead you, does anyone
remember the Pogo Ball? It was really a poor mans pogo stick. A circular
platform with a rubber ball coming out the top and the bottom. The
concept was your feet stood on the platform, hugging around the top
ball, and you were supposed to be able to bounce many feet in the air. I
think I never made it more than a foot off the air or so. And my back hurt.

I remember seeing the commercial and thinking "yes I need that to be
able to jump as high as the roof, and impress all the kids in the
neighborhood! It might also be a good way to get to school!"

Damn imaginations...

Never got the sea-monkeys, but I like to b.s. people and talk about how you can actually watch them build their own civilization . . .

I remember in the What The--?! humor comic there was a fake ad for "Sea-Honkeys"  !!!  What fun.

Did anyone see the Sea-Monkeys episode of South Park?

There IS a way to get them to build their own civilization.
