I had Sea Monkeys once as a kid. I think I bought 'em from a dime store, but I may actually have ordered 'em through a comic - can't remember.
Anyway, I was disappointed of course, though even brine shrimp seemed pretty cool to me. In the end, however, the Circle of Life claimed the little critters. I went on a vacation with my family to the coast, probably dropped some extra food in their tank for the days I'd be gone, and when I came back...shockingly, they'd all gone to "sleep."
I hope brine shrimp aren't sacred to any of the aliens that might one day visit our planet or we're all gonna be charged with the most horrendous of war crimes.

Interestingly, the sea monkey characters were designed by comics legend Joe Orlando:
Those very same designs were later used in the production of this:

For those feeling the Sea Monkey vibe, be advised that there's a catchy little song that tributes 'em from a band called Tea Leaf Green. Appropriately, the song's called "Sea Monkeys." It's available on iTunes, though for some reason they have the "s" in "Monkeys" following an apostrophe as if it's possessive. Go figure.
Anyway, a recommended song if you're looking for something light 'n' goofy.

This goes right up there with those ka-razy ads for x-ray vision glasses, and
so on. I vaguely recall a mag that had a full page of the most outrageous
items possible. At the time it gripped my imagination--but somhow my
reason always reminded me "son, I can't explain it to ya, but there just ain't
no way (these will ever work)."
I also recall the famous 'beach' ads for working out 'n' stuff--classic!

I wanted some sea monkeys so bad it allmost used to hurt. I imagined that all American kids lived a life of having exotic pet sea monkeys as pets, selling Grit (for fun and profit), eating twinkies and best of all owning your very own Daisy BB guns. I so wanted to be an Amercian back in the 70's.

I desperately wanted a pair of the X-ray specs that always seemed to be adertised in the old comic book ads. My mom stood firm in not allowing me to order a pair, telling me that they didn't allow one to really see through objects or, more importantly, girls' clothing. I refused to believe her because the ads in a Spider-Man comic would not mislead me or my friends. She did allow me to get the Sea Monkeys. It was my first and only lesson in the misleading advertising in comic books. I was crushed.

Thad,
Your Mom was right. My Great-Uncle Bill ordered the X-ray specs
and was so very pissed when he got them in and they didn't work.
He couldn't even see through his own hand, let alone women's
clothing. Of course, he'd been kicked in the head by a mule as a boy
so we all cut him a little slack.
I, myself, was a Sea-monkey man and wanted them really, really
badly. But I was a little suspicious of them since I had never heard of
such an animal elsewhere. So I didn't get any (also, the Mom
wouldn't let me get them). So I was saved from my Bill-level
disappointment.
On a kinda related note, did anyone else ever save the money token
cards in Malo-Cups? One year, all my aunts and uncles, me and my
my sister saved up the required $100.00 amount and sent them in
and received a free box of 'Cups. Good times.

I've had several batches of Sea-Monkeys. Lot's of fun.
I also remember the full page add for the "Box of 100 Soldiers",
which looked soooooooo cool! I was used to seeing those green, 3D army
men (like in Toy Story) so I thought this was a deal to get 100 for -whatever-
the price was!
I saved up my $$$, sent it off to the company. When I finally got them I
was sorely disappointed. They were very small, flat, and broke very
easily.
That day I grew up a little bit...

K-Mart used to sell this little Sea Monkeys kit at the register, back in the
80s. It was really a little hand held aquarium almost. I went to go buy a
Go-Bot or Transformer, but upon seeing the Sea Monkeys kit, promptly
put whatever robot I had down, and decided to spend my $5 on the Sea
Monkeys instead.
I think I knew that they weren't really going to be little people, but I was
really hoping they were.
I was still amused by them however. As the water got low in the tank, I
filled up a small dixie cup and added some water. A few hours later I go
to see my little friends, who had gotten quite plump, some were even
pregnant and realized all but like 5 of them were dead at the bottom. I
didn't realize you had to de-clorinate the water first. But what was
weirder was that the 5 that had lived were like a little family. Were these 5
somewhow immune to the effects of clorine?
Well about 3 weeks went by, a couple of the little Sea Monkeys were
pregnant, and I realized the tank was low again. So I added more water.
The next day they were all dead.
That's whem my mom told me I should had declorinated the water.
Thanks mom.

And another 'pet' was Mexican jumping beans. Some sort of caterpillar would be inside the sea pods and make them jump by moving inside. I never kept the jumping beans as pets. They sure seem cruel to me.
