Oddly, the author of the article points to Gail Simone's Women in
Refrigerators site at the end. That would seem to defeat his/her point, since
it shows that the "women in peril" scenes are not unique to any one writer or
artist. Also, Gail took a neutral stance and did not automatically attribute
misogyny to any comic creator.

Moore put a number of literary references and characters in those comics, so a girl named Alice might have been raped and I didn't make the connection. Both Mr. Hyde and the Invisible Man were doing some pretty vile things in those comics.

Michael, that's because Gail didn't have an agenda against any particular creator. Her professionalism is what seperates the "Gails" from the "Zans."

Alan Moore's "Lost Girls" features the erotic adventures of Alice, Dorothy Gale, and Wendy Darling.  I shit you not.

And if we wanted to get really ridiculous with "Zan's" magnifying glass, Moore wrote "From Hell" where scores of women are brutally butchered.

Yeah, I heard about that "Lost Girls" book! Moore wants to do literary porn using underage characters (though, I'm not clear if they are underage in his story).

In fairness about "From Hell," it is a piece on Jack, The Ripper. There's no way to focus on that story without dealing with the murder of women.

****

One could, of course, choose not to do the story.

But, let's not turn this into another Dump On Alan
Moore thread. As I noted on the previous page, there
is hardly a comic writer who has ever worked in the
business who could not be found "guilty as charged"
when the accusations come in so narrow and
skewed a form.

The Invisible Man was molesting Pollyanna, and Mr. Hyde sodomized him to
death in revenge for hurting Mina, whom Mr. Hyde had a crush on. I don't
think Alice shows up in the comic, but she is referenced in one of those text
pieces in the back of one of the issues. I suspect someone on the internet
had some events and characters confused.

Pollyana and Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm -- two of the most wholesome
characters in 19th century literature.

I'll bet Moore was sniggering like a 12 year old when he wrote that scene.

[edited to add] And I realize JB just asked us not to dump on Alan Moore,
but dammit, that's bothered me since it first appeared.

Let's not dump on Moore so much as the mentality that produced and encourages him, which we find in plenty of writers other than Moore.

Hitchcock wrote, once upon a time, of the difference between shock and suspense. Two men are sitting at a table at a sidwalk cafe in Paris. Thru-out their conversation, the camera keeps cutting under the table to show a bomb ticking away. If they get up and walk away, and then the bomb goes off, says Hitchcock, that's suspense. If the bomb goes off while they are still sitting there, that's shock.

Shock is easy. Controversy is easy. Paint a picture, call it a Madonna, smear feces on it. Instant shock and controversy. Have superheroes say "fuck" and engage in anal sex. Have the Invisible Man attack Pollyana. Have a lighthearted character's wife raped and murdered. Easy. Way too easy, if you ask me.

<<Let's see now --- Jasmine was tortured, and killed her torturer, which I suppose gave him something to think about while he was drowning in his own blood.   Bethany was almost raped (she punched the guy's heart out -- not much time for thought, really). I don't recall any kidnappings. Lois by the Prankster, maybe? Does Phoenix count as a death?

That's four counts in 30 years. My god! I'm out of control!! >>

And don't forget when the Scarlet Witch was captured by the West Coast Avengers and was tortured and---no...wait... never mind.

Leave it to the guys who don't even know how to talk to women to accuse people of mysogyny in comics.
