Trevor, I think John Romita Jr. can make a Rob Liefeld script look good. (I'm not suggesting he try, however.) I don't think all Hollywood types are bad (Whedon is doing pretty good with X-Men) and I don't think JMS is bad either. I think he is better suited for Squadron Supreme or something of his own creation like Rising Stars. Spider-Man is just not the correct avenue for his skills.

I read some of his Squadron Supreme stuff. It reeked of The Authority to me. I miss Mark Gruenwald.
I definately think JR Jr. made them look a lot better than they were.

QUOTE:
And Ellis has moved away from doing major mainstream superhero books, instead doing stuff like Ultimate FF and Nextwave. |

...which are "major" mainstream superhero books. (UFF is anyway.)
I'm sure many people have written superhero comics only because they needed the work over the years. The difference is that in the past such people didn't stay writing superhero comics for very long (there being other popular genres to write), and there was no internet, so if the writer ever said "fuck superheroes," we never knew about it.

When I said "major maintstream superhero books" I meant the main Marvel universe books like FF, X-Men, Spider-Man, etc. I was thinking of UFF as being an Ultimate book, and therefore not the "real" FF. I could have made that clearer, though.

"I think comparing Warren Ellis to a prostitute because he tries to make a living crosses a line as well, particularly coming from someone like Mig who I assume doesn't know the man personally."
I don't think the Ellis/prostitute comparison is that valid. I think Ellis compares more to an exotic dancer (that's stripper to you and me). But Ellis long-ago stopped being the young girl stripping to earn enough money to pay for college. Ellis is a professional stripper. It's what he does for a living. Which would be one thing on it's own, but Ellis is a professional stripper who has gained an awful lot of his fame and prestige by loudly calling for people to stop taking off their clothes for money and for people to stop going to strip clubs. There needs to be some explanation for that weirdness.

What is ironic is that Ellis is finding difficulty selling his
creator-owned stories in a market and fan culture that he had a
significant hand in shaping.

As was pointed out, Ellis had little to do with the current state of the industry. At the time of the bust he was working on second-tier (at best) books, and hadn't done much independent work.
And virtually every creator has a difficult time selling their creator-owned stories right now. That's not irony, it's the reality of the market.

Do you really think Warren Ellis has had any real impact on the business, outside perhaps bringing attention to a few indy comics? I don't see it. Ellis is influential in a way similar to the way Dave Sim is influential - but it doesn't impact the mainstream much at all. When it comes to Marvel and DC, he's just another cog in the machine.
