What troubles me when the right wing gets up in arms against teaching birth control to teens (since this will "encourage" teen sex) is that -- beyond the awful notion that sex is bad and pregnancy is the punishment -- so many of these loons are quick to "protect" the Second Amendment, and teach their kids (SONS!!!) how to shoot, without ever once thinking this will "encourage" them to become murderers.Art Linkletter got it wrong. People aren't funny. People are dangerously stupid.

Good point, JB. Teaching Cub Scouts to shoot a rifle is all about "gun safety," while telling teenagers about "safe sex" is somehow a scary proposition, even though we all have bodies and lots of us don't have guns.

JB, what do you think about what happened to Superman during LEGENDS? The ADVENTURES tie in suggested that Superman had his first sexual experience with Amazing Grace into a bathing tub... That was one of the early Wolfman stories.
I never like that idea... I DIDN'T CARE about Superman's first sexual experience! And I still don't.

I doubt Clark was still a virgin when he became
Superman.

But you never talked about his first experiences in MOS, WORLD OF METROPOLIS and the ongoings. Thank you, of course.

Having read Larry Niven's "Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex," I had hoped
Clark was still a virgin.
Especially since, after Crisis, there is no bottled city of Kandor or such to
make having sex safe.
Tho, after Crisis, I suppose he could have had sex before his powers fully
kicked in.
Hadn't really given that thought, and sorry to learn that Wolfman had.

Brendan: You and I are in agreement 100%. It really bothers me when humanitarian efforts attempt to spread condom use to Third World nations, and governments react by pulling funding. ABSTINENCE ONLY! they cry, as the AIDS and pregnancy rates continue to climb.
Another note: Teen pregnancy rates have actually declined in the U.S. since the introduction of The Pill in the 1970s, and yet a higher percentage of teens are having sex. How is that possible?

"Isn't that a given?"-John
Yeah. Ridiculous even. Why look for a root cause as there can be so
many candidates. I was really responding to John Meyers comment.
" it is vertually impossible to narrow down a route cause because they are, well, unplanned."-John Meyer
Nature gave us all the inclination to want to procreate by providing,
well, a pretty damn good 'reward' for our efforts. So as long as that's
there, folk [teenagers or not] are gonna want to do it, in the most.
No matter how you want to pretty it up. Sex is good and those who want
to, will. Where teenagers are concerned, parents, guardians or those
that govern need to protect teenagers from themselves. Not with a lock
and key but with education. Wont stop everyone because us blokes can
skip merrily on to our next 'conquest' but if paternity can be proven
then responcibilities can be imposed.
As Brendon said, we can all have sex very easily. The idea is to allow
teenagers to understand that there will be consequences and -then- let
them weigh up their pro's and cons.
-Darren
[Who has three daughters and is now shitting himself at the thought of the onset of teenage years thanks to this thread]

Wolverine is who 300lb fanboys and emotional
adolescents think they would be if they were superheroes. He is kewl.
He has these bitchin' claws and he knows how to use them. He smokes and
swears. Not like that pussy Cyclops. So, of course, they want to see Wolverine nail Jean. That's what they'd do. And that's what the comics (and the movies) pander to. |

Which in turn means that said goshdamn fanboys miss the damn point.
Wolverine is the ALIEN. He has no past. Half of his upbringing is from crazed medieval warriors in Japan and the other half a drunken haze of killing people with animalistic rages and CIA state secrets. He is the result of half a dozen violations both mental and physical and the instant he moved into the X-Mansion he tried putting the moves on someone and disrupting an establishment. He's supposed to be on the extreme of how things should be and when he goes "hunting" we are supposed to be surprised (and we are) when Wolverine isn't out killing deer but just stalking alert, twitchy game.
Where was I?
Nothing wrong with liking the character or even feeling for him (he wants someone he cannot have for various reasons, something many have identified with) but one isn't supposed to identify with him unless they actually came from a POW camp. Worse, once Wolverine actually bangs Jean then he no longer resembles the unrequited love formulator at all.... and stops having so much in common with nerds/fanboys/geeks.

and sadly I probably identify more with Cyclops... prior to actually having a successful (if short) relationship with 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or so hot babes.... except for the power to detonate mountains by looking at them.
The notion that there is something hidden that gets between him and what he wants to do or who he wants to be with.
Of course, what my problem is is neither optic blasts nor typical nerdity nor is it any of your business.
