I recall being amazed by JB's Absorbing Man in an issue of AVENGERS I read as a kid. The issue ended with AM absorbing the power of a ship's engines or something like that. It would be well over a decade before I finally got to read the conclusion of that particlar confrontation.

I prefer the long-headed Leader to the big-brained one as well.

One of the saddest (and greatest) things about JB's commission pieces featuring Marvel characters is how they really drive home the fact that the best "living" Marvel artist isn't currently working at Marvel.

Got to agree with Chuck there.
I -still- see John as a Marvel-boy and that he's been "stolen" away by DC...
One day, John will go back to the FF...oh, yes!

Accidentally, you sum up, Darren, what I have long perceived as a key driving element for many of the "bashers" -- I am "type cast" as a Marvel guy, and to Marvel fans I am therefore seen as a quisling, while to DC fans I am seen as an invader.I've never been quite sure why this attached itself to me, in particular, and not, say, George Perez, who has also jumped back and forth a couple of times --- but then, I have also long ago given up seeking any true logic in the rants of some "fans".

Well I can't answer on behalf of the other fans, just myself but I was
a DC guy until I picked up Alpha Flight. It was your art that hooked me
and I dropped every DC title I had and spent the free'd up budget on
getting as much of your work as I could.
Through you I was introduced, seduced and won over by Marvel. So
from-that- perspective, I saw the DC move as a step backwards, not a
step forward. See the -underdog- always gets the best publicity.
In saying -all- that, you then -effectively- reintroduced the DC Universe to me...So it's swings-and-roundabouts!

Mr. Byrne yould be treated equally, as George Perez. I think that you have the same quantity of input over at DC!

George Perez was attacked for "Marvelizing" DC characters when he first started NEW TEEN TITANS, wasn't he?
I have always thought both JB and Perez were more at home at Marvel -- but considering that my first comics were two AVENGERS books, one drawn by JB and one by Perez, that's not surprising!

Funny how "we" as fans are so easily "programmed" from our first comic
encounter. Or even our first encounter with one artist or another.

I don't know if you really looking for any kind of explanation, but for someone like myself who started reading comics when you were killing Phoenix (the first time) you made such a huge impact that you'll always be M to me. While Mr. Perez was doing his thing with the Avengers and Teen Titans, bouncing between the two, you stayed M for so long and had such great runs...you can't think of one without the other. Now if I was 20 something maybe I'd connect you more with Superman and DC. Just my opinion.

I love the fact that JB's Hulk appears powerful, huge and heavy without his ever taking the all-too-common course of voodoo-shrinking the Hulk's head in an attempt to further suggest how over-massive his body is.
