JB, this brings up an interesting point to me, I think word balloons would be a neat thing to include in a commission. Would it cost extra to add that kind of story element to a piece? A "POW" or a "ZAARK" would be a nice touch too.

I'd resist the notion of adding lettering or sound effects. In the first instance, because my lettering sucks, and I am not sure the paste-up lettering I have used on the regular pages would work on the boards I use for the commission pieces. In the second instance, because it think sound effects would be too "Batman".

To the best of my understanding, the Absorbing Man can only take on the properties of inert materials, not biologicals. He's not Rogue, for instance, or Amazo.

I know he's absorved Thor and the Hulk's strength before, if nothing else.

That sound you just heard is the sound of Sanford selling more Magic Rub erasers after an endorsement from JB.
I know I plan to check the eraser out, now.

An eraser, of course, is only as good as the pencils it has to erase. If the penciler is one of those artists who digs the pencil point into the paper, and/or lays down the blacks like s/he is tarring a road, even the best erasers will come up short.I have seen my eraser -- two different brands -- defeated twice. Once was when I inked a single page of George Perez for an X-MEN ANNUAL of long ago. Back then (and, who knows, maybe to this day) George was in the first camp, the kind of penciler who dug his line so deep into the paper I joked that all I had to do to ink it was pour ink into one corner and let it flow thru the grooves. George's pencils were so dark the ink actually beaded up on them, and I had to erase the page before I could ink it! Took a major effort to get the pencils down to a "grey" that would actually take ink. The second instance was Ross Andru, in an issue of ACTION COMICS he penciled. Ross at that time was suffering from an eye problem that made it difficult for him to properly balance the forms within an image. To get around this, he used to lay out the page on the back, then flip it over, and lightbox it so he could do the tightening. This is a variant on an old art director's trick -- hold a page backwards up to the light, to see if the forms are properly balanced (like, that left eye isn't higher than the right).* By doing this, Ross was able to correct the imbalances he found in his layouts. Unfortunately, from the perspective of an inker, he must have had incredibly sweaty hands (something I sometimes experience myself) and the pages were all slicked up like wax paper. Not only a bear to ink, but a double-bear to erase. The graphite just smeared. *Paul Kupperberg tells the story of taking a cover down to the office of one of the old-time editors, to show him how well it had turned out. The old editor took the cover and, without even looking at the image on the front, flipped it over and held it up to the light.

Didn't absorbing man touch the beast and became a beast himself, at
which point he threw the beast away and tried to make his escape with
some hottie...

JB i love the latest commission... especially the work-in-progress...
but for me... it still is the MARVEL/DC piece that amazes me...
this is a close second in terms of impact and amount of lines on the page...

I never thought Rhino was on the same strength level as Hulk. he would
need these partners in crime to have a chance. I believe Rhino was originally
created as a Spider-Man Villian.

As mentioned previously, I'd love to see a start-to-finish video of JB doing a piece like this. It might be a fun thing to upload to the site someday (hint hint).
