Wow wow wow. You can almost feel the texture on each character,
their rocky/sandy skin, scaly costumes, and pointy heads. You
continue to outdo yourself sir!

...what type of 'direction' did the commissioner give
for this piece?
***
Just the "cast".

And do you ever think up titles for the stories these
commissions would be telling?
****
No.

WAAAA HOOOO - John this looks incredible - even more so than I had imagined!!! I love the different texture look on the Sandman and the Abomination.
And, thanks for sharing with us the "work in progress". Curious, when you start to ink a piece, are there specific areas you like to tackle first? Do you hit the faces, and then work from there? It is interesting to see how you attack various parts of the piece, such as the flying rubble around the Hulk, half of the Rhino, etc.
Now I am dying to see this beaut finished. Best...
- Scott

Very cool... I love seeing the progression.
After seeing that I immediately thought of a commission piece I'd love to have done someday. An "evolution" piece, if you will. Not just a "progression" of your professional career, but also of "the process". Start with something like a rough sketch of a Charlton character - Wheelie, maybe. Next something from your early Marvel days - a light-pencil breakdown of Wolverine maybe. Then onto the FF days - a tighter pencil of the Thing, for example. On and on... maybe seven or eight characters, through the Man of Steel era, the return to Marvel, the Dark Horse days, etc. End with a fully rendered Rog. It'd take some thought - about aspects of your career, exactly which characters to choose that would fit, etc., but would be pretty damn cool.

Wow. First impressions on seeing this brought to mind Incredible Hulk 314 and as much as I love that issue and run this commission really does convey a sense of power and dynamism that I have only ever seen from Kirby in his prime. It is amazing how such a small part of the Hulk's hand breaking the border adds so much to the depth of the scene.
As others have stated the variation in texture from character to character is also very noteworthy all the while maintaining the organic integrity of the art.
The work in progress aspect is most appreciated and hopefully we will get to see the finished version for comparision in a purely educational fashion, of course.
Great stuff.

It also 'kind-of' looks like your working from the background to the foreground, at least as far as the figures go!?

JB, thanks for posting this. This process is always something I've wanted to see.
Found 32" x 40 boards, and going to pick them up. I will give them to
Jim to bring up to you when he visits. Is there a particular brand you
like?

One thing I always liked about your Hulk as compared to just about any artist since McFarlane was on the book is that you STILL don't draw that "pretty" hulk. You draw a monstrous Hulk that just looks big, mean and scary. Too often recently the Hulk has been a pretty boy Fabio like guy, especially following Dale Keown's run. Kubert was decent at portrating a monster Hulk but even Perez was drawing "I'm too sexy for any shorts but purple" Hulk....
There is an ape-like quality that just shines through, like the Hulk is the ultimate evolution of the Cro-Mag. Very excellent and Kirby like...

JB, all of the commissions you've shown of late seem to be Marvel
characters. Is that a trend or do you tend to get more requests for one
companie's toys as opposed to the other? And have you done or would you
do commissions of your own characters? Thanks.
