Elliot Smith: I'm shocked anyone has rushed to his defense.
Then you don't understand comics very well. Art is subject to personal taste. I don't think Milgrom was the best artist out there at the time, but I can certainly think of other artists who's work I liked less, and those might be artists that you like more. Nobody's wrong.
The reason I didn't like the art in SWII was definitely because of the inker, because I really enjoyed his art with Jim Mooney on SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN back around that same time.
Oh, and the best thing about SECRET WARS II? JB's cover to issue #1.

Ian, Gene is remembering correctly, it was Giant Size Defenders, guest starring Daredevil. Although I don't remember the issue number, this Defenders story included the introduction of Korvac (who would go on to obliterate the Avengers in a classic story arc). Each Defender had to face a creature that was more or less his equal (without being his equivalent) in roughly neutral territory.
One good scene from that comic was the battle between Namor and a Gorn-like lizard in a desert setting. After the lizard had put Namor down for the count in their fight to the death, there was a three or four panel shot of the creature's saber-like tail raised high. In each successive panel the tail is bloodier than the one before. Some of today's artists might want to take note of how to correctly use the same basic picture to tell a story element.

JB, are you the JB listed on the cover inking over Zeck's pencils on that cover debut of the black/white Spider-Man costume? **** No, that's John Beatty.

Oh, and the best thing about SECRET WARS II? JB's cover to issue #1.**** Story behind that cover: Sal Buscema drew it, originally, but Shooter found fault with his version and called me in to do a "better one". I took one look at Sal's and drew exactly the same thing, just in my own style. This one Shooter declared "perfect!" I'm sure it had nothing to do with my name on a book then being a guarantee of bigger sales than what Sal was pulling in. (Some of those characters I have only ever drawn then, too, I think?)

I don't recall you ever drawing the New Mutants of that day since then, but I could be wrong.

I loved Secret Wars...but, like others, was less impressed when I re-read them years later. Secret Wars 2? Waste of paper, in my opinion.

I loathed the intrusive cross-overs of Beyonder in other titles and by the time the New Universe debuted I avoided its titles specifically because of the Beyonder connection.

I don't remember any connection between the Beyonder and the New Universe. Am I simply mis-remembering?

While I loooove that cover, I'm going to disagree. The best thing about SWII are the 2 Spider-Man covers JB drew.

don't need to continue buying crap just to have it in my collection."

Sal Buscema - another totally awesome, underappreciated artist.

Sal fell into the same trap that has caught Al Milgrom. Both are very good at their jobs, but for a period each in his turn became the "go to" guy when something needed to be done overnight -- sometimes literally. And anal fanboys, as we have seen, are like elephants -- huge and gray. I mean, they never forget.

There's very little to defend in SWII....but, here's a shot. As much as it messed with other titles and as poorly as it was executed, there are still a few redeemable bits scattered here and there. I still remember the Beyonder zapping an advertising executive so he could change into a super-being when he grabbed his favorite advertising award. In a very short amount of space, Shooter created a fairly interesting character.
