"Hey, that kind of looks like Guardian's force field around Puck."

"Hey, a mysterious white hand."

"Hey, that kind of looks like Guardian's arm."

"Hey, wait a sec..."

"No, it can't be."

"Oh, shit."

My joy reading the last issue did a complete 180 and the teenage me was heartbroken all over again.  I didn't see this coming because I didn't want to.

From setup to reveal in only 2 issues - can you imagine how long it would have taken these days?

Also interesting to see JB's take on the Transformer craze that was going on at the time - and it looked like the robots had Canadian accents!

-- is this series stil going?   LOL

I love these issues but also hate them --- since for me, the book was finally really becoming a great book and I had no idea that Byrne was leaving in 2 issues.

Love the Puck fight scene.

I miss JB's Puck.

I haven't seen the cover to this issue since probably sometime in the late 80s.  It was a victim of my less than tidy bedroom.  The splash page with Guardian is how I identify this issue.

One of my favorite issues in the run. I was happy to see the whole team in action.

Every time I see Wild Child, I am reminded how later artists took away his unique features. I never understood why, other than being too lazy to bother drawing the character correctly, or they just couldn't do it right so they didn't even try to do so.

For the longest time I thought Wild Child was supposed to be a very ugly woman.

He's not a pretty man, either. ;-)

Amazing stuff. I'm sure it was a big punch in the gut for those who had fallen for Guardian's "resurrection".

Of course, since I didn't pick up these issues until years after they came out, I already knew that it was a con, but seeing the execution was a real thill.

Good issue....unusual cover...

Why Heather's clothes are white and red?...Was that a Mr. Byrne's request?

Everything about this issue was great.

It had many favorite moments for me: the cover, the double-page
splash, introducing me to the West Edmonton Mall* and the best
Heather, panel 1 of page 20.

I was blown away by the plot twist and couldn't wait to see what was
next. Unfortunately for this young fan, I would soon learn JB would be
leaving the series for The Hulk!

* At least one panel from this issue was reused in an article about the
mall in, I think, Time Magazine. I remember it was panel 3, page 15,
where Puck is thinking to himself about the theme park/mall concept.

Discovering it was a real place was a great "wow" moment. That was
one of the things about this run: it fostered a desire to want to learn
more about Canada and visit as well.

I never understood either. He wasn't the only character to get that
treatment. Lil lost her extra height and Madison lost his working man
looks. This, as I'm sure you know, was just a symptom of a larger lack of
care with the book as it moved further beyond JB's run.
