First thing I thought of when I saw the chalice/faces was the old Electric Company bit of the two faces forming words B - ITE  BITE.

It pleases me to know that I'm not the only one who had trouble with that panel.

 

As I said before, JB's version (the correct interpretation, obviously) was a contender in my mind from time to time, but I was never really sure.

I can't help but wonder if the head-on "skull" image is so horrific and tragic that many people, myself included, subconsciously rejected it and began looking for less painful interpretations of that panel.

Then there's the final page with an image of what I read as a portion of Mac's smoldering skull.....

Having taken another look at the issue, I don't see a skull there. Just a pile of smoldering ash.

I was very disturbed by this issue.  Even though Mac wasn't one of my favorite Alphans, His death had a very real impact on me as a child.  I loved this team and I thought this was the end....It's too bad Mac didn't stay dead (not counting his "return" by JB).
