I'm still in denile that Northstar is gay....

On a side note -- what were the "five words" Courtney spoke?

(help me kill James Hudson?  that's five...???)

A year of so ago, back when DC's PR machine was hitting everyone over the head with the new Batwoman's sexuality, this was one of two JB comicbooks that I lent to my sister as example's of the right way to handle homosexuality in the genre (the other one was the Superman story where Maggie Sawyer's daughter runs away).

For the record, I was in my early teens when JB did Alpha Flight, and Northstar's sexuality went right over my head at the time.  I was in my late teens when JB did Superman, and, at this point, I can't say with 100% certainty if I realized that she was Gay or not.

Let's hear it for Subtlety, The All-Ages-Approach, and all of JB Rules of Good Comics.

I still think he could've given him some odd male roomate or something. It's odd an accomplished ski athlete would be mysteriously single.

From Snowbird's origin tale: "Words he has never heard spoken aloud come easily to the lips of the man called SHAMAN." - Loved that writing.  It gives the impression of Michael Twoyoungmen as not just a guy with a pouch, but more of a conduit (I'd bet the farm that's a word I first read in a comic) for forces as old as the earth.

Martin - in AF#22, there was another male hanging out at Jean-Paul's place,
for what it's worth.

Plus, my experiment
with the Japanese brush-pens was starting to show its weaknesses.

JB, would you elaborate on this?  I am always curious about your inking techniques and what has worked/not worked for you in the past.

Thanks!

I didn't read this, or any Alpha Flight, until about 2002.  I really wish I could have read this one without knowing Northstar's sexuality.  It might have been fun to "get it" rather than having it announced on CNN.

I first read this issue when I was very young, and it wasn't until later that I went back and saw the clues regarding Northstar's orientation.

Also, this issue provides a great example of the subtle connections that were present for readers to think about. Snowbird's father is the same poor gentleman who raised Tundra in issue # 1! It's never stated overtly, but it's clearly there for those who care to see it.

The characterizations are fantastic, the line variation of the inks beautiful
and the gay subtext flew right under my adolescent radar.

While JB's "Alpha Flight" is my favorite all time title, the first year's covers
were not as strong as on FF.

I consider the origin of Snowbird to be one of the most interesting in comics.  She was born for the sole purpose of being a hero.  Talk about pressure!
