I loved the Origins series that ran in the back, and was intrigued by the fact that the whole team didn't get together much in the series. A fun way to approach a team book, and one that really made me look forward to the issues where they did get together. Even when there wasn't a cliffhanger, there was a cliffhanger!

Gerry, that bullpen image is a great example of the types of shots that I loved of JB's. It was like getting "candid" snaps of our Heroes which didn't look like they had been just lifted from the "HTDCTMW" book, while retaining dynaminisim.

Excellent issue. Two stories for the price of one. The beginning of the Marrina/Master story and the origins beginning.
The Master of the World is a great villain.
Sadly, after JB left Bill Mantlo, rejected him as a villain and he didn't show up again until issue 78 during James Hudnall's run, and began to be built up as Alpha's numer one foe again.
Plus, Mac's decision to cross that Jaxon fellow has a bit of an impact down the line as well.

I wasn't as fond of this issue. One of the new members turns out to be a bad guy? Another is incapacitated (and the one I was most interested in!)? It felt too soon - I really hadn't gotten to know the characters yet.
I did love the fallout from this story - the Master was a great villain and I thought it well done that Puck's injuries took a while to heal.
I loved the origin story for Guardian and all of the origin stories in these first issues.
And the Bullpen page is a classic. I wish I had a poster of that.

The missing pages left me quite confused. Who were the people out to sea?
I remember Marrina from when Simonson was doing the Avengers and he turned her into the Leviathon. After she died I remember Namor roamed the world looking for their children. JB, why wasn't that ever mentioned during your great Namor run?

The difference between the Cover and the interior art...
Here is where I began preferring JB's inks over Terry's inks. During this time period.

Great issue. I particularly love the backup story detailing Guardian's origin, since it begins setting up the chain of events that leads to AF # 12.
One of the great things about this run is that that are whole bunch of little clues sprinked around relating to AF's backstory, the characters' origins and backgrounds, and the build-up of characters and events that lead up to the disasterous first battle with Omega Flight.

I can't tell you guys how warm and fuzzy I get looking at these old familiar pages. Alpha Flight issues 2 and 3 were the first comics that I actually had to hunt for. I finally found them when in the process of discussing comics with one of my class mates he mentioned very casually that he owned them both. We quickly made arrangements that involved the exchange of $7 and me bringing him lunch the next two days.

And how I miss the days when it was possible to do stuff like that. When
it was possible to plot out long story arcs, character arcs, planting clues,
laying down subtle threads --- and not have to be constantly aware that
the Powers That Be could at any moment hand down some new stunt that
requires everything to be turned on its head. "Oh -- all your characters
have to go off to a distant planet and have an adventure there." "Oh,
here's this all-powerful being who has to be woven into these issues, no
matter what you had planned for them." "Oh, the next year of stories is
going to disappear between issues." etc etc.
