Is Cody, the man Guardian is talking to in the bottom panel of page 2,
named after your pal Gary Cody?

••

Yup. One of the very few times I have used a name and a likeness both at
the same once. Later, Cody was turned into a villain, and drawn to look like
me. Ho ho. Stop. You're killing me.

Gary signed my Alpha Flight #1  (on page 2) at the same time JB did.

Thanks Gerry (and Ryan) for the scan of that article in Marvel Age.

First time I've read it, tho I think I've picked up a lot of that info thru these on-line conversations and such.

god almighty. Are you serious, JB? Must have been Scott Lobdell...

Anyway, let me chime in on AF #1. Absolutely one of my favorite comics ever. I think it was the first book I ever paid $1. As an aspiring artist I wrinkled AF 1 more than any other book, trying to copy JB's style. I must have copied that panel of sad Guardian on page 2 about a million times and it never looked remotely good.

I look very much forward to this thread continuing.

If there is one comic that would sum up my love of all comics it would have
to be Alpha Flight number 1. It seems as clear as yesterday, standing in the
comic store in the summer of 1983 and holding this issue, excited as all
heck. A comic with Canadian superheroes, created, written and drawn by a
fellow Calgarian. I felt like I was part of a special club. It remains to this day
my all time favorite series. For you JB maybe it was another job, but for me,
well, it was pure pleasure. Mr Byrne, you are and will always be my Kirby, my
Ditko, my Adams. Thank you.

I liked the creation of the monster as well. However, imo Alpha Flight really starts kicking with issue #2.

JB, there was a set of "John Byrne's Alpha Flight" action figures released a few years ago (unfortunately, at the time, I didn't have any spare cash), and, if I recall, your likeness was used on the packaging (I think it was a pen-and-ink job, but it may have been a photograph - my memory's fuzzy on this).  Did you receive any financial remuneration, or were you exploited by Marvel without adequate compensation?

I did the illustrations for those blister packs, including the self-caricature.
And I got a long ton of money for it. It was one of those reality checks that
come along from time to time. We sit in comics (or sat, anyway, at the time)
saying "Look at these royalties! Look at all the money we're making!" Then
we do a job in the real world, make $20,000 for two days work --- and get
apologized to because it's not the top rate!!!!!

Thanks, JB, I'm relieved you didn't think my question too invasive.

I am glad to stay. Still, it is true. Through your work I was lead to discover
other comic artists, then fine artists and on to to a career in fine art. Yup, my
poverty is all your fault.

I purchased this issue from a local drugstore prior to going to my after school job. Within an hour, my excitement about this book coming out overcame me and I lied, saying I was sick, in order to go home immediately just to read it.

Thanks for contributing to my delinquency, Mr. Byrne!
