My family and I have the opportunity to stay 3 days in Chicago. It is a cheap fare and it will qualify us for free flights to Disneyland later in the year.
With the flight times, it really is like 1.5-2 days: One day arrival, one day open and one day leave. We would be flying in to Midway airport.
What is the best way to get around town without a car?
Where is a reasonable place to stay? Nothing fancy.
What can one see in 1.5-2 days with an 8 and 4 year old?
I'll be doing some research on FoodNetwork.com for some of the "Best of..." but I'll ask anyway. Where to eat?

Well, I'd want to check out the Chicago Bears facilities if possible, but that's just a displaced Bears fan talking. Checking out the Michael Jordan statue would be interesting, if only to see if any angry Jazz or Knick fans have defaced it in any way while touring the city. They have great deep dish pizza, of course. Sausage too. The Holy Shrine of Ditka is a must see I hear.

It's not hard to get around via public transportation- 'though as I recall, they're hiking fares after the first of the year.
As far as family friendly outings go...the Music Box theatre is just fantastic (and there's a great little coffee house called Cafe Avanti across the street, as well as a Dairy Queen about a block away). I'm a few blocks from the "world famous" Brookfield Zoo, but the Lincoln Park Zoo in the city is pretty cool too. Adler Planetarium, Museum of Science and Industry, Art Institute...come to think of it, there's quite a bit of fun for the whole family in our fair city. Hit Metromix if you need more info or ideas.

Ride the elevated train. Feel the Sears Tower sway under your feet from the
observation area. Drive around trying to find places used in Spider-Man 2
and (I think?) Batman Begins. Have a hot dog Chicago style. And pizza,
perhaps.

As for the kids, the 2 things I remember from going to Chicago as a kid are going up the Sears Tower and visiting Chinatown.

I saw it last year, and it's a truly awesome view, and should impress a 4, and 8 year old (and you.)

Kids that age, and that amount of time....either the Sears Tower, or the Hancock Building's observatory. The latter isn't as tall, but location gives it a better view, and you're right on Michigan Ave...lots to do. Kid friendly area. There's a children's museum on Navy Pier...haven't been, but I know it's targeted for the ages you have. For kids taht age, the Museum of Science & Industry is a must.
That should do a good job at killing a couple of days.

Has anyone eaten at any of these places?
What were JB's favorite pizza & rib joints?
Is Chinatown in Chicago similar to New York's. Would my wife be able to get some knock-off designer purses?

No knock-off's. Smaller Chinatown...typical souvenier shops, and mostly just restaurants.
