The above strip reminds me of a story Roger Stern tells from his yoot. In a "Hi & Lois", the twins, Dot and Ditto are poking around in the attic of the Flagstone house and find an old trunk. In it, they find something which Dot identifies as a "magic button", which supposedly grants wishes. Ditto immediately wishes for a cookie -- and Cookie, from "Bettle Bailey" promptly appears in the next panel. As Rog noted, since "Beetle Bailey" was in the row immediately above "Hi & Lois" in his local paper, the effect was as if the character had fallen thru the gutter between the strips.

I never knew until recently that 'Hi and Lois' was a 'spin-off' of Beetle Bailey.

Beetle was granted leave to visit his sister (lois) and her 'new husband' (Hi)...and that visit established the new strip.

Mark Evanier chronicled all the recent Blondie crossovers with other comics (characters from more than a dozen other strips were invited to the Bumsteads' anniversary).

I remember thinking it was pretty cool when I was in high school and two of the students at the local university who did daily strips in the school paper had a character in the top strip hand something to one in the lower ... nice to have that option, when you're only printed in one paper.

IMHO of the Blondie Aniversary crossovers the best was Rose is Rose. They have the son asking if he can go to the party and Rose says he has to take something appropiate. So in one hand he has roses for blondie...and in the other he's pulling his wagon holding a giant sandwich for Dagwood.

Don't feel bad, Wallace, my genius friend didn't know the CBS symbol was a stylized eye until Letterman mentioned it in his promos.  Boy did he go down a couple notches in my estimation.
