I always liked the two splash pages. One inked by Janson and one by Austin. Cool.

Joe Zhang: I didn't like it as a kid. Most of the stories ended in a bad way. ---------------- Same here. I always felt that WHAT IF should have been what the creators would have done had they not taken the story in the direction they did, yet not go beyond the restrictions of what might have been allowed. (PHOENIX: THE UNTOLD STORY was the perfect example of what I wanted from the series.)

Eric Kleefeld : I also loved the one-page joke What Ifs, like "What If Tony Stark Had An
Eating Problem Instead of a Drinking Problem?"

I still remember a line from that story, even though I have not read it since it originally came out.
"I will have half a cow. And a Tab"
I hope I have that right. It has been a long time. Still very funny though.

What if # 3 , hands down. Armored Avengers & maybe the best inking job on Gil Kane ever. ( Klaus Jansen ) Although it did start the disturbing trend of Iron Man dying in the title.

Okay, off topic here. What am I doing wrong? I tried to bold Eric's
name and the entire thing went bold even though the preview showed it
correctly. I wrote a post yesterday that was all italics. Even after I
edited my italic post to get rid of all italics, it still showed them.
Should I use HTML code instead? Anyone else having this problem?

John Byrne:I agree with Wayne -- "The Armored Avengers"
was the best the series ever produced.

Agreed!!!
"What If" Issue #3 was the first exposure i had to Gil Kane
and Klaus Janson. Amazing art for this great story.

I still love the first all-humor one best. The page that had all the different
Watchers watching each other watch each other still cracks me up, as
does the whole "Aunt May - Herald of Galactus" bit.

The all-humor one was hysterical. The all-armored Avengers was neat, too-- wonder if that's where Krueger got his future Avengers from, hm?
My *least* favorite issue was "What if Phoenix Had Lived?" It seemed designed to say "See? Our story was the BEST way for it to work out!" Seeing Phoenix wipe out the X-Men in one page (with Wolverine not even fighting!!) and then she incinerates the Earth... feh.

My favorite was "What If Gwen Stacy Had Lived?"
And I remember really enjoying "What If Rick Jones Had Become the
Hulk?"--it was handled in a very campy way, but was fun to read
nonetheless.

I liked What If # 37 (the mini story about the Thing and "Virus-X", specifically) and thought that it had a superior resolution to the storyline compared to the issue of Marvel Two-in-One (# 81) that it was derived from.
Plus, that Ed Hannigan cover is pretty cool...
Thinking about this story begs the question: Where have you gone, Arvell Jones?

I don't remember the issue, but it was a story by Busiek and Immonen where Flash Thompson becomes Spider-Man instead of Peter. Flash acts like a villain, so Peter must stop him using a spider exo skeleton.
Then, Vol. II #105, Spider-Girl's origin issue.
