Found a website devoting some energy to my aborted Captain Marvel series. Along with the usual display of ill-informed options presented as fact—such as it being DC’s decision to axe the project—there was a reference to me being more closely associated with “the OTHER Captain Marvel.”

Huh?

I googled "the other Captain Marvel" and came up with this from IMDB:

Canon City Comic Club
S1.E7
The OTHER Captain Marvel (Shazam)
Episode aired Mar 24, 2019
Carolyn Page joins Tristan and Andrew to discuss this kinda creepy story of a child in a man's body.

I have no idea what this is all about.

The moment someone looks at Captain Marvel and finds the concept “creepy” is the moment to turn around and walk far, far away.

What was your first exposure to Captain Marvel, John? Did you take to the
character immediately?

That’s almost a trick question!

Startling out in England, as I did, my first exposure was Marvel Man, and it was only years later I learned about the genuine article, thru an odd combination of MAD and Steranko’s HISTORY OF COMICS.

I'm trying to think of when you ever drew the "other" Captain Marvel (Mar-Vell, presumably).  A little bit in AVENGERS #181, I guess.  Anywhere else?

Brian, that flashback was in #319.

He also drew him on the cover of OHOTMU #13, Book of the Dead.

Wow, I guess it’s obvious from being born in the UK, but I never thought
that you would have read the original Marvel Man. That’s a real surprise.

Perhaps they are referring to John's issues with Ms Marvel in Marvel Team-Up and the Avengers (given Danvers is now the other Captain Marvel).

DC's mismanagement of the Big Red Cheese has just been sad. The original Captain Marvel stories were among the jewels of the Golden Age of comics, high quality all-ages storytelling, fun, interesting, and with a consistent style and point of view. DC's various takes almost seemed like they were intended to put Captain Marvel in his place once and for all as a special needs Superman knock-off.

Now that the Fawcett characters are in the public domain, maybe someone will take a stab at reviving the real Captain Marvel.

Shoulda left him on his own Earth.  One of the many characters that never recovered from Crisis.
