That was my recollection to Matt.
Claremont liked the name & reused it.

IIRC Chris Claremont was/is a fan of folk band Steeleye Span. Maddy Prior is one of the singers in the group. Both of Claremont's usages of the name, with the minor spelling change in the surname, were presumably small homages.

He must've kept that one all around his hat, or under it.

I don't know if it counted as common knowledge, but Claremont was active on the Compuserve message boards at the time and was very forthcoming about the Maddie Pryor storyline as it unfolded, including how the Avengers annual character was intended as a one-off until and he liked the name and Steeleye Span. As well as how obnoxious he found the entire situation.

The entire situation where he opposed resurrecting Jean Grey, did not want to kill off Maddie Pryor, was not satisfied with the story they worked out to do so, and was taking heat from fans and critics about nitpicks in a story he was improvising and writing under protest.

You sound like me, who has posted under questionable means (more than a few pints) and are defending a decision.  Or maybe it’s the Jean Grey of it all! Honestly, it’s all a bit bonkers.

I am sorry, but I can't cut Claremont any slack.

He was the one to tie Madelyne to the Summers family, have her survive a plane crash the exact moment Jean/Phoenix died and have her look exactly like Jean! How the heck is this supposed to be a coincidence and does it not already make things complex?!?

If Madelyne, in CC's mind, was supposed to be Jean resurrected, I guess he must have told people. If she wasn't, he made things insufferable for all the other writers by those shenanigans.

Scott is already rendered an asshole by the writer's choices, btw. He dates Lee Forrester something like, what, weeks after Jean dies and then he dumps her in one issue as soon as he meets Madelyne!

Yeah, but that cleared the way for Magneto/Lee.

As JB often points out, X-Men became a phenomenon after he stopped
working with Chris. But I find that time has made me much more unfriendly
toward Chris’ lack of discipline in terms of things like keeping Cyclops (and
Magneto, and Wolverine, and Professor x, and Storm, and Kitty, and… oy!)
on anything like the rails they were originally on.

I say this as a fan, really— I yearn for the stories he would have written if
someone had kept the overall X-Men boundaries tighter.

If comics by the same writer can get this confusing and confused imagine a book of collected writings from many different places, times and languages. Words to live by! :^D

Putting on my old Doctor Who fan hat, just take the bits you enjoy and try your best to not look at the bits that stick out, they're just wobbly sets or computers addressing the title character in a way that should not have happened. A boom mic shadow. A singalong at the OK corral. I don't care what the current custodian or authority might say, there is a granddaughter dagnabit!

So you take those pieces and make them fit how they work for you, then forget the ones that obviously don't fit.

I just splurged a little on getting back Avengers Annual #10. I have #7-9 and had been thinking of the great Golden art now and then anyway, so...
