I was only reading XMen for the artwork. No problem admitting it. The
really cool Tom O letters were pretty, but, at 14, I wasn’t spending a ton
of time on word balloons two inches wide and three deep longer than a
Tweet.

JB: Characters always take the hit for bad writing. Like it’s their fault.

It’s a whole lot like blaming the victim.

***

Oh, I don't blame the Chief in the least--never have. Just like I never blamed Cyclops when he went through a bad patch. It's the creators who do right (or not) by these characters. (FWIW, JB, I can't recall an instance where you weren't doing your absolute best to be true to the characters as established.)

And it's possible to rehabilitate them. The only real complication is whether that "new" status takes root and people assume that's how they always were. Then it takes more time and work to shift things around. People still think Hank Pym was abusive to Janet van Dyne on the basis of one story that was, what, 35 or more years ago?

I like that you see similarities between Sara and Jean, yet there's enough visual information - and I'm not just talking about their hairstyles - to differentiate the two of them.

Edited to add an omitted word.

Some days it doesn't pay to chase a bear 16 blocks.

Even if it is Yogi. Nice page today. I wonder where this is going. Love the misdirection regarding the “evil” force possessing the squirrel, fox and bear.

I love that Jean, while she wants out of the super-hero biz, doesn't hesitate to lend a hand when others are in danger. Her trip down from the window looks like actual telekinetic levitation, not Superman-style flying... just like when Sue Storm is riding a force field as opposed to the Torch jetting around. Flying in character!

Flying in character!

••

Thanks for noticing. It's been important to me, over the years, that the power of flight express itself in manners suitable to the particular characters.

Important details that set the bar higher. And a good looking bear!

A smoldering bear is never a good thing!

Love the lighting effects in the last panel.

I very much appreciate the quiet character moments, especially these scenes with Scott. The commissions have been the only time we saw the "all new all different" X-Men from JB's art in the years since leaving the title, and while the commissions are fantastic, they don't dig into the characters in the way that made me a fan of JB's X-Men run. X-MEN HIDDEN YEARS was such a treat when it appeared, and it made me long for... well, exactly what we are seeing here!

And while these quiet character moments make all the difference, I like that they are quickly followed by a mysterious, smoldering bear. Well done, sir - it's still a comic book, and this embraces the pure joy of the medium.

A smoldering bear?? Was I the only one who thought of the bears head turning into a flaming skull and it would ride one of those little tricycles like they do in the circus? Beware the Bear Rider! (I'll see myself out.)

In all seriousness, cool page today, from Jean's TK "flight" to the subplot of the mysterious animal possessing, er, thing coming into play. This should be fun!
