IIRC, Xavier’s dad was a research scientist or something along those
lines. Is that business really that lucrative?

Ed Piskor's X-Men: Grand Design, although in an alternate continuity, said "Brian and his wife Sharon were the only scientists who were successfully able to divert the water out the flooded New York City ", during an attack by Namor. They got a sizable reward from the city.

The latest volume of the X-Men has Xavier as a billionaire and one of the wealthiest people on the planet, with numerous shell companies. My favorite: Wolverine Waste Management.

Isn't comic book wealth one of those things you have to just go with?  I appreciate a little drama with Peter Parker struggling to pay his rent.  But with characters like Reed and Professor X, I just assume they've got enough to pay for all the gadgets and tech.  Amazon stock maybe?  Whatever, just get to the adventure!

“Reality” has intruded more and more as the casual readers have slipped away and the hardcore “fans” have taken over more real estate. Especially as some of these folk have become the people actually creating the stories. More and more explanations are demanded—and given.
