Hmm, Eric J., that format seems ideal. Like a Book you can Binge….

What I love most about the arc (and there’s a lot to love) is the seamless transitioning between all the scenes in 164. Some were built on coincidences but they helped move that issue forward like an irresistible force. What a ride for a 7 year old.

One thing that I found interesting about this short run was that Scarlet Witch appeared to be "off-model". Literally! I presume that JB hadn't yet "cast" the Playboy model (I forget her name) for Wanda. By the next run during the 180s, she was set.

I was going to suggest that, but it’s probably a bit of both, inks and casting.

My “model” was the late Julia Lyndon.

Thor's body language in JB's panel may be more fitting for a god's arrival, but Dave brought more energy, IMO. My guess would be 2021 JB would more closely align with Dave's work rather than his previous work. (I don't like the look of shock on Nefaria's face in Dave's work. Don't really gib with the rest of the story as far as I can remember.)

**

I agree completely with your assessment of Dave's version over mine. I was still one of the new kids on the block, and "stage fright" often dominated my work, causing me to produce far less dynamic images than were called for.

Very often, when I look at my older work, I see what appears to be some other artist DOING me, and, as is so often the case, picking up on the weakest elements.

I can't help but wonder if your superpower of drawing heroes standing in character isn't working against you here. After all, Thor is a god and should be extremely confident going against one lone human. His body language in your panel makes sense, it's just not the most visually exciting way to end the book. It feels more like the next issue's splash page to me.

Thor exudes confidence in JB’s page. Don’t see how you could think
otherwise.

Interesting.

This is my first time seeing this version of the last page of AVENGERS #165.

Now, 44 years after the original published page, I cannot get JB's page out of my head.

If I am the "you" in question, then I couldn't agree with you more. I'm saying that JB's panel is exactly how Thor would react to going against a lone human. The body language is correct. However, that works against ending the comic on a dynamic image. There's nothing inherently wrong with JB's panel (IMO) until it's used as the last panel in the comic. Dave's just makes you want to know what happens next more than young JB's does.

This being the internet and all, let me clarify that I am a huge fan of JB's work. I honestly think he's the most influential comic book creator outside of only Stan Lee. But Dave's was the more appropriate panel to end the book on (though I think he gets the body language wrong on both characters). For reasons JB himself lists above.

I had misremembered my history with these three issues. I actually
read them for the first time probably 10 or so years ago when the
corresponding Essentials volume came out. It was within the last 5-7
years I got the actual issues of the comic.

I looked her up.  Wow--perfect!  Great choice!

I do love Elizabeth Olsen and I have really enjoyed most of the MCU movies, but part of me still longs for totally comic-accurate casting and costumes.  One day...
