Scott - I have always though it looks like the last page of #165 was drawn by Dave Cockrum. I get that impression from both the Thor and Nefaria faces and poses.

If there is a run I wish JB could reimage (redraw), this is it!!!
As an 11 y/o, I remember purchasing AVENGERS 164 & 165 off the newsstand rack in the summer of 1977 and immediately going nuts over more of that BY-NER guy artwork.
I was not able to get issue 166 until almost 3 years later at a LCS due to school beginning at that time and playing Pop Warner football.

John Byner is a VERY different individual! In fact, you could say he's downright bizarre.

Bought 164 at a Stuckey’s on a family vacation from Pennsylvania to Florida. It took me years to find out what happened next and it still outdid my expectations. Flawless arc in every way and those three issues serve as a template for the books I publish.

John Byner is a VERY different individual!•• In my teens I used to wish for John Byner to make a guest appearance on some show, and for TV GUIDE to transpose a few letters in his last name. ;-)

Those JB-drawn issues of THE AVENGERS were attention-grabbers for me.

I just checked, btw, and that last big panel of Thor vs Nefaria was, indeed, drawn by Dave Cockrum. I don’t recall why.

As I recall Shooter’s plot was pretty complete.

It's astonishing to me how much good work was being done even though in today's terms it was being "cranked out". Perez, Byrne, the Buscemas each had multiple books each month in the late 70s and were just rocking out great work over and over month in and month out.
