 QUOTE:
I guess my take on the Punisher is based on how I viewed him in those issues of Amazing Spider-Man as a kid. Mercy bullets made it a little easier to view him as a good guy but they did away with those when killing bad guys became his main thing in the 80's.

He only used those when teaming up with Spider-Man, so the latter didn't have to face that the Punisher killed people regularly.

Applying real world thinking to stories can ruin what was once a fun story in previous times. Take Starfox, his Pleasure Power and the fact that he was a ladies man gets translated years later as him being a rapist. Comics "journalists" and fans took two things about the character and had to twist it into something else because that's how someone in the real world would use those powers. Then Dan Slott had to do a story about it and a once fun character is now painted as a creepy one.

We should have a Rule: if it is not possible to “grow” a character without fundamentally changing the character, stay away from the character.
