I'm not sure when they started wearing the hoods and robes (and don't really care, quite frankly), but they actually didn't start burning crosses until about a decade or so before that vile film was made.
Yeah, doing a bit of amateur researching right now (quarantine life) and the timeline is not entirely clear.
But what can't be denied is the effect the film produced and the reinvigoration of the KKK as a consequence.
Trying to go back to the thread subject, the power of these kinds of symbols when given a "legitimizing" platform is undeniable.
