JB, I've noticed that certain characters never seem to have highlights on their black costumes (Havok, X-Men school uniforms), while others frequently have highlights and frequently don't (e.g. Spider-man both costumes) and still others who always seem to have highlights (e.g. Cyclops graduation costume, redesigned Fantastic Four uniforms). Do you have insight into how this has come to be? And do you have a personal rule of thumb that you practice when deciding when to include highlights?

Edited to clarify that my reference to X-men School uniforms is a in response to recent trends.

It’s mostly arbitrary, and very often quite random. Whatever serves the “drama” of the piece.

Sorry to not have something more insightful.

I like seeing Nightcrawler's costume and the original X-Men uniforms done with flat blacks. Spider-Man's original threads look good with flat backs sometimes, too.

JB, was it your decision to make the blacks on Green Lantern's uniform flat on that holiday special you drew a while back?

Sort of. I was harkening back to the early Gil Kane days, my introduction to the character.

Would highlights indicate somewhat reflective cloth, while the absence of highlights might indicate more of a non-reflective material?
