Wallace, as I recall, Stephen Strange was believed dead, and searched for by Dormammu's or Mordo's forces - so he took on the identity of Stephen Sanders ("It's amulet licking good!") and took on a different outfit and whole head covering mask.

A rather sad effort to turn the good doctor into a more conventional superhero.

And about the masked Dr. Strange--Wasn't he cancelled not too long after that change?  So, perhaps it was an effort to save the book?

Yeah, it seems pretty clear that the addition of those conventional superhero tropes (mask and secret identity) were an attempt to broaden Doctor Strange’s appeal since the book was not selling well enough .

SUPERMAN by Steve Gerber and Gene Colan--That really would have been something!  That short PHANTOM ZONE mini-series they did was just a taste of what was possible.

PLASTIC MAN by John Byrne--His adept handling of Mr. Fantastic and his humor with She-Hulk make him especially suited for this unique and underserved character.

THE QUESTION by Don McGregor and Gene Colan--Another call I would have made five minutes into my imaginary editorship!

BLUE BEETLE (Ted Kord) by Roger Stern and Kerry Gammill, David Michelinie and Bob Layton, or Kurt Busiek and Tom Grummett--Any of these would have been a fun, quality comic that I would still buy in an instant!
