Thanks to a comment by person on Facebook about how John Byrne has possibly drawn himself in comic books more than any other artist, I was inspired to spend a cold Sunday afternoon grabbing images, cropping, twisting, pasting, and pushing them into a collage of all the "Byrne by Byrne" images from comic books (and fanzines) I could find.

One may be a fudge... There was a "New Universe" profile for Byrne that I believe he did, but it may have been by Carl Potts or some Marvel staffer (it's basically a simple "smiley" face type drawing, except that it's frowning. LOL!).

JB do you remember the drawing?

Oh, and  NO!!! The "How To Draw Comics Comic" cover by Solson Publishing is NOT included because Byrne has stated before that is NOT meant to be him. Ditto for the cover art to Ron Goulart's "The Great Comic Book Artists", so that is why they aren't represented: They ain't Byrne by Byrne!

The drawing from "Sensational She-Hulk" #50 is meant to be JB, but for some reason the colorist colored his hair and eye color brown, which isn't correct.

Lastly, if any of you can think of any other "Byrne by Byrne" drawings not included here, please share. NOTE: ONLY drawings of Byrne by Byrne, not caricatures by other artists of him, or fumetti (photo) comics of Byrne. I wanted this to be only actual drawings of the man by the man himself. Thanks!!

Matt, John can confirm for you whether this is actually him but I've always thought astronaut Mal Burns might be at least a nod, since John wrote and drew the story in Space:1999 #6.

I can't confirm it, but I hope JB will.

So weird that you posted this, Matt. A few days ago, my friend and I were talking about that Byrne image on the bottom left (where all the Marvel characters are standing around JB and his drawing table) but couldn't remember the title of the comic where that cover appears.

Where is that image from?

Derek, it was a Bullpen Bulletins page illustration that appeared during one month in, I believe, 1984. I believe it was later used as a cover of a Marvel Universe trade paperback.

Matt, what about the rest of the drawings from FF #262?

Matt, I believe that BB page was from winter/spring of 1983.

Several of those were fanzine illos, not appearing in comic books.

L Hunt, my intention was to have a drawing of JB by JB represented from each publication I could find, not to use every panel of JB from those publications. There would be no room for that!

JB, I wanted to include fanzine art as well as the actual comic book appearances. Basically, it's a collection of any example of you drawing yourself. The fellow who mentioned that you probably have drawn yourself as a character in more comics than any other artist is what inspired me, but I didn't intend to limit my collage to just official comic book appearances. For me, part of the fun with this endeavor was the evolution of your self- caricature.

By the way,  JB, I noticed you didn't really do anythong with you as a character at DC. Was there any reason for that?

Subconsciously, I probably never really felt “at home” in the DCU.

HERE’S an interesting compilation of self portraits by other artists.

Once again I am “quoted” out of context. sigh
