I think Lobo was retrofitted to be more Wolverine-like when he was brought back in the early 90s. I just reread his earliest Omega Man appearances, and his characterization was very subdued compared to the 'Lobo's Back' era, when they amped-up his scruffy, wildhaired, cigar chomping, shoot/slice-first-ask-questions-second bad attitude

Post Zero Hour, Ferro and his twin brother were given an origin where they fell under the control of an unscrupulous scientist named Doc 30, who was a parody of Professor X and had a team of X-Men like mutants. Ferro's brother was the Colossus analogue.

In "Omega Man" he was treated more seriously (despite that gawdawful costume he wore then), but wasn't he the guy who murdered the Fred Hembeck-looking alien by flicking his brains out of his skull? And his partner ripped the wings off of Harpis! Lobo was pretty savage from the start.

Savage, perhaps, but played straight and without the trappings of his 90's-present self, which begs to be seen as riffing on more of a gruff Wolverine attitude.

Oh duh- Vigilante, anyone? An obvious Punisher Analogue. I liked it as a young teen and LOVED drawing him but I don't think it aged well.

Swamp Thing preceding Man-Thing

I think Man-Thing's first appearance in Savage Tales #1 was published before House of Secrets #92.

DC's Captain America analogue was Americommando, one of the Crusaders in Freedom Fighters #8 & 9.

Black Lightning v1 #6 featured analogues of Iron Fist (Steel-Fist Feeny) and Shang-Chi (Tony Isabella didn't give him a name, but had Black Lightning call him Pajamas).

Yeah, I suppose that explains Vigilante.

Guardian was an old Kirby character, but the blue and yellow with the badge style shield said 'police' maybe, not the nation and it's flag. there were a load of early flag colors characters in the earliest comics, even a guy name The Flag I think.

Later Guardian seems a bit more about his tech so maybe more towards Iron Man.

In terms of a DC 'tribute' to Marvel I suppose there was Funky Flashman. I wasn't thinking of analogues really... I did find it interesting how Hawkeye would get a Black Canary type partner in Mockingbird and things like that, I might call that more a deliberate analogue.

I will also take this moment to note that many fans and comics historians debate if one ripped off the other. It's funny to me to suggest that either was ripping off the other, as they both were clearly ripping off the basic premise (with differences, naturally ) of The Heap.

•••

Not coincidentally, the Things Swamp and Man made their debut around the same time Jim Steranko was publishing his comprehensive HISTORY OF COMICS, which devoted several pages to the Heap.

It's interesting what brings something to the attention that results in something. Sort of like Run-DMC reminding everyone about Aerosmith with their version of Walk This Way and suddenly Aerosmith are back in a big way and new albums, and even old albums reissued, are making the charts. There was renewed craze for old turn of the century art nouveau Alphonse Mucha and similar posters in the late '60s and early '70s, and I wonder if there was a big article in one the most read magazines just before?

One of the better Amalgam one-shots was a mash-up of Man-Bat and Man-Thing... Bat-Thing!
