Oh, that is PERFECT! And it's good to see Uatu as well!

I was expecting to see one cover that I thought you might have used - "What If... the original Marvel Bullpen had become the Fantastic Four?" I kinda figure that you fit into it... maybe as John Byrne, Power Man!

A very happy new year to you as well, Mr. Byrne. It looks like, "Welcome to 2021, X-Men! Hope you survive!" :) :) :)

I recognized Thordis right off the bat, and the Fantastic Five, of course. I think I'm going to enjoy this storyline.

Nice to see The Watcher again!   Of course your take on him is the quintessential one in my opinion (as usual!).  This new storyline has moved right alongside the Jean/Imperial Guard storyline for me.

The upcoming What-If? Series on Disney+ is going to be quite interesting.
Mr. Byrne, we all know the MCU isn’t your cup of tea.  But the nature of the What-If? concept possibly removes some of the barriers of entry for those who prefer a more faithful adaptation of Marvel tales.  Will you check out What-If?

And Happy New Year!

I LOVE the Watcher, especially under the pen of Kirby and Byrne. What a great start to what I expect to be a great story.

Agree that the definitive Watcher is Kirby/Byrne. Newer attempts are ghastly.
This is an awesome first page.

Mr. Byrne, is it easier to draw in miniature but still make it look recognizable (the monitors) or drawing something more expansive on a page and keeping the proportions/perspective correct?

I prefer JB's version of the Watcher myself.  Looks more alien than the "fat guy" version.  (I haven't read any new Marvel comics in years, so I don't know of any "newer" attempts the others mentioned).

However, while Kirby drew him like that originally in FF#13, I think it was Kirby himself that fattened him up.  By the time of the Galactus issues, I think the Watcher was much more like the "fat" version than his original depiction.

I do have a question about the Watcher to the group.  While he's obviously known to tons of Marvel characters, and the Blue Area of the Moon must be an extremely well known feature to Marvel Earth, does the general populace know there is an alien looking down upon them (even if it may not be believed by most)?  Or is this a secret to the general population?  Has this ever been mentioned?  I would think this is still a secret, but that's just an impression.  I don't remember it ever being addressed.

The first Watcher I encountered was the 'fat' one (in a "pocket book" reprint of FF #49), but I do prefer the mysterious, thin version with the oversized head.

Nice page.

JB, had you decided to go down the route of Marvel publishing these stories, would you still have done this one?

Marvel is a “reality” unlike anything we might encounter outside those comic books. Aliens drop into the middle of Manhattan on almost a regular schedule, but people still freak out as if they’ve never seen such a thing before. “Mythical” gods are shown to be real—and much more active in the world than any gods of “real” religions, yet those religions do not collapse. Neither do churches spring up worshiping those elder gods.

And, most famously, the FF can battle Galactus in Times Square, but (usually) the Avengers don’t show up.

It’s all very insulated. As it should be.
