Winters did seem to have a lot of powers. Mind control, turning into crystal, and teleportation. Odd.

I like the idea that Magneto would kill off anyone he sees as a threat without a second thought.  I tend to think of Magneto as 2 people - the pre-deaged one (from very early in JB's run on X-Men iirc) and post as it was after that point that he started to soften.  Makes for an easy way to explain away (in my mind at least) the drastic differences between him.  This is clearly the early Magneto who was a big time villain vs the one who would take over for Charles as leader of the X-Men (which imo was too quick of a change).

Jack O' Diamonds wasn't the only villain who seemed to have a dozen powers. Re-reading the old Silver-Age X-Men stories last year,  I was reminded how some characters,  particularly the villains, seemed to manifest convenient powers and abilities at points, most of which were never utilized again. Heck, Juggernaut had so many powers pop up in his early appearances,  I jotted them down with intentions of writing up an article for my blog about them.

The de-aged Magneto was before JB's run on X-Men.  The "new" X-Men never fought Magneto before Alpha turned him into a baby.

I figured one way it could have been explained that Magneto had such a change in personality was what happened on Muir Island to him while he was in that state. But, Claremont and later writers have piled on so much backstory since, that's no longer a valid way to explain the changes.

Magneto as a full on villain?! That concept must feel completely foreign to people under the age of 25. I am looking forward to the good vs evil X-men battle that is most likely on the horizon.

I read somewhere that Winters' mutant ability was to resist the fatal affects of radiation he was exposed to, and that it was the radiation that gave him his powers.

He was one of the first (IIRC) to be a mutant polymath whose abilities weren't related (like: telepathy + mind control + mental projection, etc.). Nothing he does connects to the other stuff he does.

Paving the way for Nightcrawler, maybe?

Not sure Jean's telepathy+telekinesis could really be considered "related".

And, yes, to make matters worse Jean's telepathy was supposed to have come about from her "sharing" Xavier's power while he was in hiding, but once it was there it didn't go away.

Lifetime free membership in the JBF to the first of you to correctly date Jean's first manifestation of telepathy.

And you don't need mind-reading powers to know I DON'T WANT GUESSES!!!

Jack Winters! JB, you never miss a trick (and stick the landing). Awesome.

The quality of the pencils in today's page---out of this world. How do you do it: clean and simple but with enough details to blow the mind? What a gift you have!

Magneto at his vile best! Love it.

In Bizarre Adventures #27, in the unnamed Phoenix story, Jean is shown at 10 years old sharing thoughts with her dying friend Annie.
