There are basically two types of editors. Those who hire the people they think are best for the job, then stand back and let them do it, and those who treat what the writers and artists turn in as raw material they must shape into a finished form. I’ve worked with both—tho in the second instance “with” isn’t quite the right term.

I have heard horror stories over the years, from
professionals, in the field. Also have seen jarring
evidence of heavy-handed editors that is easily seen in the
finished product.

I recall reading that French artist Moebius visited DC’s New York offices. He saw a Wonder Woman drawing by JLGL on the wall and asked if he worked from a live model. Upon hearing the answer was no, Moebius stared at the drawing and murmured “Sonofabitch….”

There is also the tale of John Buscema seeing some of
Jose's work and trying to get him to agree to inking over
his work on the second Superman/Spider-Man treasury
edition.

I have a page of original art from TWILIGHT, a series i disliked in every way possible. But the art is JLGL!!

That Batman/Hulk “editorial notes” thing is farcical.
They pretend to give Mr. Garcia-Lopez notes on Hulk’s toes when, on the
final cover, they paste copy over the toes they don’t crop off!

I've still got that Modern Masters book from
Twomorrows on JLGL from a few years ago. As well as
the awesome raw pencil art and a gorgeous gallery
section, the interview shows he is a really humble,
down to earth person.

I never really get over just how good JLGL is. And because he is the art of DC's licensing, his work crops up all over the place.
I was watching an FA cup game yesterday and then when it ended, the channel went on to a talking heads show about ice hockey. One of the pundits was sitting there wearing a T-shirt with Superman and Batman on it -- using JLGL art.
His art is so clean. No extraneous lines. Spaces in all the right places!

Garcia-Lopez is an underrated storyteller - his Cinder & Ashe mini-series (written by Gerry Conway) is an amazing example of his skills.
I read that Conway only gave Garcia-Lopez a plot to work with and left it up to him to lay out the panels/pages, allowing Garcia-Lopez a lot of freedom on how the final product would look... and the result did not disappoint.
It's a "hidden gem" in his career work but worth a look.

I first 'noticed' him on a Deadman comic. I can remember vivdly a beautifully detailed scene of an older man in a park feeding pigeons more than I ever will a thousand posing or fighting muscle guys.
I have not known of Cinder And Ashe before but I did buy Atari Force from it's first appearance.

The Jonah Hex stuff is the visual goldmine, of his work, from my
perspective. Stunning, stunning work.
