Started the article and read the Bond reference but it was Contact that my brain jumped to. Hell of a job to decommission something like that.

Really sad. It was an amazing technological achievement and it will be a loss to the world of science when it's gone.

I too thought about Contact. The movie is good, but the book was fantastic. It is sad to see this telescope go because I seriously wonder if we live in a world that would care to build a better replacement.
