Hi buddies! Got a request for you. From some reason, I'm in a train mood these days, so how about a list of train songs? Like "City of New Orleans" by Arlo Guthrie, or "Midnight Flyer" by the Eagles, or "Long Thin Silver Line" by Bob Seger.

Any genre is good. What do you have for me?

Freight Train is a guitar standard, covered by a long list of luminaries. Chet Atkins did a good version. The original by Elizabeth Cotten (complete with lyrics) is also worth checking out.

Night Train is an instrumental by Jimmy Forrest, though it's pretty sedate. There is a more upbeat version by James Brown, to which Sonny Liston once famously trained.

Not explicitly a train song, but Breakthrough by Queen has a bassline that is suggestive of a train -- leading to a video that had a train as its central feature.

It was dismissed as 'dad rock' back in the 90s, but The Day We Caught The Train by Ocean Colour Scene is a pretty good song (and totally apes I Am the Walrus in parts).

Have to mention ELO with their Last Train to London.

Additionally, Trans Europa Express by Kraftwerk is a lengthy train track.

Did you see what I did there?

Last Train to Clarksville - The Monkees. With Micky on vocals! (I even played this song myself on stage once...)

Simon & Garfunkel's Homeward Bound sort of fits the bill. Not quite. But he is waiting at a railway station and it has that spirit of the itinerant troubadour in keeping with the likes of Jimmie Rodgers and Leadbelly.

Speaking of Leadbelly, the classic song Midnight Special is actually about a train. Leadbelly seemed to have a lot of train songs. He also had a song called I'm Leaving on The Morning Train and Silver City Bound is another train-based tune, though it's not that explicit from the lyrics.

Railroad Song by Lynyrd Skynyrd is a favorite.

There’s All Night Train by The Allman Brothers Band.

Can’t You See by Marshall Tucker Band also features traveling in a
train.

I always liked Train Train by Blackfoot, as well.

Princess of the Night by Saxon. About the old steam
engines that used to transport the mail, very evocative
lyrics.
