It has a very solid story, great sound, great sets and designs; just a really fantastic film! I got it and another Czech film DVD (Erotikon 1929) in slim card paper holders, but they did have English subtitles (that's why the little Union Jack on them). I'd be interested to know of any extras on a newer DVD edition as it could easily be worth an upgrade for me.

Here's something similar... a German tv series titled Raumpatrouille, and it's on Youtube. I originally found out about it through an album of it's music and effects. I can't imagine they didn't see Ikarie XB1.

Raumpatrouille Episode 1, 1966 (Subtitles in English)

And there was also an early '60s British puppet series by the folks Gerry Anderson left, titled somewhat generically Space Patrol. It has some amazing sound effects and futuristic music, and the stories and science are a lot more based on things than Fireball XL5. Andy Partridge of the group XTC was a big fan of it (and sf paperback cover art signed 'Powers') and credits it with putting certain sounds in his head.
