JB, I think I recall reading that you are sometimes uncomfortable drawing shadows beneath standing characters. (If I have that wrong, please correct me.) Whether that's true or not, I have to say... I like the ones you placed beneath Ashley and the fully de-cloaked alien in the first panel, particularly because it reinforces the invisibility of the other three.

Not so much "uncomfortable" as, well, unimpressed with my skills in that area.

IMHO, the two best "shadow-casters" in the Biz were Jack Kirby and Wally Wood. Kirby, because his shadows were stylized, and most often had little to do with the shape of whatever was casting them, and Wood for exactly the opposite reason: his shadows seemed like exactly what we'd expect from the object.

Intimidated by that, from very early on I sort of leaned away from casting shadows, unless they were somehow necessary to the story (as with one where I used the absence of shadows to foreshadow [ahem!] one character being a ghost).

On today's page, the shadows emphasize the invisibility of the other characters.

This storyline with the D’bari is happening sooner than I would have
guessed. Usually there is a slow buildup.

Arguably it's been building since Lilandra was taken over by the Phoenix Force. One would assume--at least I did!--that any surviving D'Bari would take an interest in that.

Perhaps you're imagining you see some effect of the excised subplot, but, with one exception, all those pages came after today's. And the one exception required only a small amount of redrawing in a single panel.

Nice! I didn't expect to see these guys so soon. They're a totally different kind of antagonist: Dangerous, but they have a legitimate beef. We don't need the whole universe to be in danger every time to have a good story.

For just a minute there, it was as though our minds were linked by Professor X!

This! Yet another reason why I don't usually care for company-wide "events"...

True dat!

That was one of the minor frustrations of working with the New Gods. It wasn’t easy to find “small” stories that were not “beneath” them.

You wouldn’t want that, Wallace! Remember what Mike Mignola said about the inside of my head!

Hey, that gives me a thought: Is Jean's telepathy powerful enough to establish a "psychic rapport" the way that Phoenix did with Scott?

It's an interesting idea. Presumably the Phoenix used (but maybe had to amplify) Jean's innate powers to make it happen. It's possible Jean could do the same if she tried.
