Jimmy Carter is 96 today. He is the oldest living former President.

There will probably be some difference of opinion here on his effectiveness as a President, but there shouldn't be any on the work that he's done outside the office to improve the lives of countless people.

Carter is an amazing person. I was very young when he was President
& my vague memories are that @ the time he was seen as a disaster.

Since then, everything I read about him, what he has achieved, how he
has acted, has been nothing but the best of what a person can be.

I was seven when he lost to Reagan, and I remember everybody thought he was the worst president ever. It was even a subject of playground conversation! When I was in kindergarten we had a rhyme about how bad he was:

 QUOTE:
(to the tune of the Oscar Meyer commercial)

My president has a first name
It's J-I-M-M-YMy president has a second name
It's C-A-R-T-E-R
Something, something, something
Something, something something
'Cause Jimmy Carter has a way
Of screwing up the USA!

Looking back, Carter was fine and given how badly and continuously his successors have fouled up, it must be hard for younger people to imagine what was even considered so terrible about his term. Aside from the lines for gas, it seems like just about everything wrong with his presidency was even worse under his successors. Democrats let Carter slink into retirement amid an air of pity and humiliation, while Republicans found it within themselves to offer strident, snarling defenses of the far more egregious and comprehensive failures of Bush and Trump, and even pushed Bush to reelection. Hopefully history won't repeat as farce.

And of course his advocacy and volunteerism has set an impeccable example.

I had a Berenstein bears false memory thing with Jimmy Carter fairly recently, in that I was convinced he had died and that Clinton, Bush and Obama were the only living ex-presidents. Really don't know where my brain got that from.
