A new week in the new normal.  Here's what's being put aside for me at my LCS:
  • Batman 99 - Of course, the next issue is an honorary milestone.
  • Catwoman 25 - This will be a Joker war tie in.
  • Metal Men 10 - Still have to read issue 9, but this is a series that I enjoy.
  • Detective Comics 1027 - Technically, this would be the 1001 appearance of Batman in Detective Comics, but who am I to quibble.  It will be a surprise for me as to which cover I'll get, as I won't be in the shop for another two weeks.

Star Wars #6- They need to get some momentum with this book. One thing about the old Marvel run is that it was fun, sometimes this era of Star Wars can be boring.

Once and Future #11- I really enjoy this book!

Batman's Grave #10 - I'm assuming another installment of pretty pictures, amusing dialogue and little plot

Detective Comics #1027 - I wasn't going to, but then I did. Got the Bermejo cover.

Stillwater #1 - interest concept and I seem to be following Zdarksy a lot these days. I normally don't bother with "exclusive variants" but I really liked the Brian Level one so ordered that.

Amazing Spider-Man - Sins of Norman Osborn #1 - Marvel doing their best to annoy me again. If it's a chapter of the latest Spider-Man story, just include it in the Spider-Man series. (And yes, you will likely see me whine again when the "Last Rites" tie-ins start showing up.) The Sins Rising story itself hasn't been bad so far, but we'll see where it goes. Don't entirely care for the tweaks to Stan's background in the Sins Rising special, but he was in Hell at the time so I can pretend the stuff I didn't like wasn't true. :-) Minor pet peeve with the Lethal Legion - it's nice to say their names and maybe even what they can do at some point in the actual story. I recognized Whirlwind (who was named) and the Grey Gargoyle, and I'm guessing the third is the Living Laser, but I haven't memorized every comic I've ever read and not everyone has read as much as I have. Throw me/us a bone, here. I'm hoping that them tying ASM into the story in Amazing Mary Jane #6-10 increases the odds of them publishing #7-10 at some point. (Still nothing as of the December solicits.)

Captain America #23 - a shocking (yawn) return or two. (Been so long I'm not 100% on where things were left.) At least Cap's back in the outfit.

X-Men Marvels Snapshot #1 - first two Snapshots were nice. Haven't gotten to the third yet. Not that it means much since they're all done by different creative teams, anyway...

Once & Future #11 - a couple of nights ago I had just enough time before lights out to read one more comic and decided to do O&F #1. Ended up reading all 10 and just lived with the extra tiredness the following day. I'm a sucker for stories with people who Know Their Stuff (part of the reason I'm so fond of Alan Scott and Jay Garrick) so Grandma is a delight. THe Grandson's nice, too, I guess. As far as "Arthur's Return" premises go, I think I prefer Knight Life and Camelot 3000 to "he's going to kill us all!" (I read Once and Future King at an impressionable age I guess :-) ) but it's an interesting take worth pursuing. Bringing in Beowulf and friends(?) opens it up a bit, but if Gillen's going to do another series about "stories," I just hope he doesn't pull out the blank page metaphor at the end again. Still, I'd say I'm in this for the duration.

Money Shot #8 - haven't gotten to this one either

Also a couple of recent back issue purchases I wanted to note -

All-American Men #67 - the first appearance of Gunner and Sarge. I tend to fold these guys into the Losers, which was a late 60s book so I sometimes forget how long these two have been around. I checked Mike's Amazing World and for the benefit of those who find these kinds of things interesting, the month this one came out was between Flash #105 (first issue of Barry Allen Flash after his Showcase stories) and #106; Kirby still had a couple of issues of Challengers of the Unknown left to go; and we were one month away from the first appearance of Sgt. Rock, two months away from the first appearance of Supergirl, six months away from Hal Jordan, and a year after the first appearance of the Legion but nine months before their second.

All-American Men of War #82 - first appearance of Johnny Cloud, the Navajo Ace. If Mike's Amazing World is correct, I got the book just four days shy of the 60th anniversary of the original 20 Sep 1960 need date. Neat! (The book has a house ad for Justice League of America #1. Just imagine...)

----------------------------------

I was in a discussion with some Star wars friends
earlier this week, and this is what I wrote about the
NEU in general:
So, the new issue of the Star Wars comic dropped today.
Big issue - Luke looking for clues to Jedi history. It’s
an interesting story, good even, & he ends up with
something important.

I like where Marvel are going, clearly Luke must have
been on a quest to learn more of the force, increased
his training between TESB & ROJ, but the thing is, some
of this stuff feels like it should have been set AFTER
ROJ, not before.

One of the things I have disliked about the NEU is that
overall, it feels like it is just treading water - it
feels like what we got before TTT & DE, when Lucasfilm
said you couldn’t progress the story. Even the 'big'
things that happen, seem to be slight of hands really -
like this story in SW6

& that, to me is a big problem. We were used to the
stories progressing - there is so much to be told in
this NEU - the establishment of the academy, it’s
failure - which we got a bit of in the Kylo REN comic,
everything feels held back. We are, what, seven years
into this NEU & what have we really learned?

Compare that to the first seven years of the OEU - we
had had Thrawn, DE, marriage tale of Han/Leia, lots of
old republic lore written (Mandalore, Sith Wars etc),
heck, we were starting TNJO within seven years of the
OEU starting.

There is nothing in NEU that even scratches that level -
possibly Mandalorian, but nothing in books or comics.
I’ve stopped buying the books because there is just no
consequence to anything. Now an argument could be made
that those conditions applied to the parts of the OEU
set in the past - but it didn’t feel like that because
there were characters you cared about - & they
dovetailed into the progression stories where
consequences did happen.

What am I saying? Not sure. Other than I think current
EU needs a jolt, to branch out. They clearly have people
who want to do that & today’s Star Wars comics are
hinting @ that (Darth Vader has a story with Padme’s
handmaidens), but they are set in the wrong era to allow
them to do the things they want to. You can’t have Luke
progress/learn too much because you always have ROJ
leaning over the story - thus far & no further.

They cannot take the risks the OEU could, until they
move past ROJ, & that is likely to be another three
years. & yes, you would then have TFA looming over, but
I think Mandalorian shows how that can be managed.

I then went on to talk about NEU characters with
potential that seem to have been fizzled out/cloned,
rather than reach their potential - first up would be
Rae Sloane, who was clearly being built up & then just
..... stopped

I think I was able to decode most of the abbreviations, but to verify: is TTT = The Thrawn Trilogy and DE = Dark Empire?

You pretty much nailed my issue with this run, James.

Forgot to mention Marvel Snapshots X-Men plus my LCS suggested that I try Iron Man #1.
