Article on Kitty Pryde "Coming Out"
The amount of disinformation in this article is Trumpian.
Basically, Ellen Page became Kitty. Thus an inevitable chain of events was set in motion and a bunch of typical noise is being made by people claiming they "always knew and anyone who didn't wasn't paying attention."
And no one will actually go back and prove it... because it can't be proven... because it isn't even remotely true.

A ridiculous storyline. Create a new character rather than imprint it to one who has never shown these tendencies

What surprised me is the Chris Claremont reference... He seemed to confirm he wanted to make Rachel and Kitty a couple...
That's weird because I'm pretty sure I didn't see anything like that in UX-Men. I didn't read a lot of Excalibur comics so I don't know about what happened in this series but that's still surprising to me.

Wishful thinking on someone’s part, looks like.

Ok, I haven't read X-men in a few years, but if people are talking about the signs being there all the time, I missed them.

Basically, Ellen Page became Kitty.
------
Well, no. It doesn't have anything to do with Ellen Page. Ellen Page came out in 2014, and the discussion of Kitty's sexuality was well before that.
I am genuinely confused that people are finding any of this shocking, because I've been making the joke that Chris Claremont writes all his female superheroes as supergenius, bisexual ninjas for a good 19 years now (when Sage joined X-Treme X-Men), so when he says that he wanted to make Kitty and Rachel a couple... well of course he did.
The discussion over Kitty's sexuality stems from Kitty and Illyana's friendship in the 80s and whether that was just a deep female friendship or subtext for a lesbian romance, especially given that Illyana herself was never given a romantic interest. Whether this is wishful thinking on the part of queer spaces in the internet, or actual subtext from Claremont, it seems Marvel picked a side. But that debate was long before Ellen Page was cast as Kitty and even longer before she came out.

I read those comics. My friends read those comics. Some of us are gay. Never once heard anyone suggest this.
Strange that Out magazine did a 2015 story about Iceman coming out and acknowledges there were, at the time, 2 Bobby Drakes and one was not gay because he was dating Kitty. Why didn’t they go on to discuss the oddity of this if, at that time, a debate was swirling about her sexuality too?
Out magazine Iceman article
I’d be genuinely curious to see this “debate” referenced anywhere before Ellen Page took the role.

Illyana was shown many times during Claremont’s time to be into boys. Sunspot was never given a love interest, yet no one’s running out to suggest he was gay. Same for Moonstar. Same for Karma. Very few of them actually DID have romantic interests. Kitty actually WAS someone who did and it was a guy.

Karma is gay. And apparently Dani and Rhane are a couple in the New Mutants movie.

In what was a real rarity for me at the time, I actually picked up the Mechanix mini-series off the stands when it first appeared. The draw for me was Kitty, who was always a favorite character of mine as a kid (I also picked up the trade of the Shadow & Flame mini, which has some SERIOUSLY gorgeous Paul Smith art, but anyway...).
The one thing I really remembered from Mechanix years after the fact was the almost kiss between Kitty and Xi'an, and Kitty's response to it (she was the narrator).
The thing is for me, I started reading X-Men after the JB run, so the Kitty that I knew as a character was entirely driven by Claremont - the genius, the ninja, etc. So the intimation of her bisexuality in Mechanix seemed of a piece with his approach to her character. Lord knows this is one of the thornier issues in comics, being attached to an interpretation of a character that's at the very least not what the original creator intended.
But I don't really buy the argument that since Kitty hadn't ever shown these tendencies before, someone should create a new character to - I guess - be bi, instead. For starters, the character has been around about forty(!) years, and the Mechanix series came out in 2002, roughly halfway into her fictional life. And secondly, like in real life, a lot of people take some time to figure out their sexuality. And Kitty in continuity would be I assume in her early 20's, which scans.
