To me, the Oscars have been a joke for decades.

They lost credibility when Roberto Begnini won the Best Actor award for Life Is Beautiful (Tom Hanks or Edward Norton should have won) and it was a joke that the movie was even a Best Picture nominee. Arthouse and foreign language movies should not be nominated, and that movie was both.

They've often given awards to pretentious, boring movies and ignored certain genres. If I had to choose between watching The English Patient or paint try, it would be a tough choice. And THE DEPARTED, which Martin Scorsese finally got the Best Director award for, isn't even one of his top 5 best films. He got it because the other nominees were weak that year. (It did deserve Best Picture, but Scorsese should have won for at least four other movies before then.)

I'm all for inclusion and representation but I admit my eyes glazed over after about a minute of trying to follow these remarkably complicated sounding rules. I've also never been a fan of forcing / crowbarring stuff into movies that may have little or nothing to do with telling the best or most accurate story.

You've heard of Hollywood Accounting? The only movies
that don't qualify will be the ones that accidentally
made a profit!
