"I was far enough ahead on FF that Chris was able to see the Jean story as a finished job."

Ah, the "no good work ethic goes unpunished" form of management. I'm familiar with it. So, would this be the moment you thought "F*** it, I'm off to DC"?

Concerning today's page, I suspect Xavier does have an ulterior motive. If so, I appreciate the way that you write him. He's a good guy, but somewhat callous in his methods. The ends justify the means type of guy, which is a much more difficult character to write and still make likable to the audience.

That was a go-to move for Chris. He’d ask for characters to dress in “jeans and t-shirts”, and each time it seemed like he was thinking of it for the first time!

No sure I understand the implication here---was it a coy passive aggressive move to tell you how to illustrate a scene...or was he just forgetting he had been to that well several times?

Today's page looks great, and the story is flowing nicely. (I'd be curious after it's all "out there" to hear what you went back to change.) It's nice seeing Colossus getting some more "screen time" too. Lastly, as has been mentioned already, your depiction of water and the underwater environment is very effective. When did you first get the idea to use those cross-cutting wavy lines?

Peter should have thought through this a little better!

As I mentioned, I had already accepted the Superman assignment. Foolishly, I thought I could work for both companies. (Shooter's boss, Mike Hobson, had wished me well, saying what was good for DC was good for Marvel.)

I should have known better. Shooter had called me a "quisling" when I did the UNTOLD LEGEND OF THE BATMAN job, so there was little hope, realistically, that I could continue at Marvel while also working at DC.

In the parallel universe where you were able to work for both DC and Marvel concurrently - would you have had the same workload on the Superman titles? Realistically, how many books could you produce a month in the mid 80s?

At that time I was routinely turning out three books a month, two full pencils, one "flakedowns" (what Roger Stern called my detailed breakdowns).

(One of the stranger discoveries of crossing over to DC was that none of the inkers there seemed to understand what breakdowns were, which resulted in a lot of pages that looked like they belonged in coloring books. The inkers were not adding the blacks and textures, as expected.)

I probably didn't note it at the time, but was Colossus' leg injured in the Savage Land?
