Found this exchange online:

“   On 5/7/2019 at 2:13 PM, Robot Man said:

Like some one here said [Byrne] could easily charge $50 for an autograph and get it but he signs for free. A rare situation these days.Another great guy is Steranko. First one is free and the rest are $5. each which he said he gives to charity.”

“They are paid to come to these shows. It's not like they are doing everything for free.”

Contrary to what the second guy thinks, I don’t/didn’t get paid to attend shows. I expected the show to pay for transportation, lodging and food. But there was no additional fee. So, yeah, those books I signed for free I signed for free. Period.

When you are invited to a show today, who pays for your
expenses, the show organizers or the comic company?

Steranko just did a CGC signing event. I assume CGC (or other) has tried to get John Byrne to do a "certified" siging event. Any interest? Would you do this?

I'm not really an autograph guy or a convention attender, been to a few.  But count me among those that wouldn't be surprised to see you charging that amount, particularly when I suspect many of the signed books are subsequently sold.  But also count me among those that would be grateful if you signed something for free.  Classy.
