Neal Adams' blue Angel is one of comics' all-time great designs.  It's ridiculous we haven't seen more of it.

Let us remind ourselves that Neal’s Angel is BLACK. Blue is just the default highlight color.

With the leather boots! Not the Tipped yellow boots from the Champions.

I would've gone with something other than red for Angel because it would be less unique to use red and white, too much like Guardian/Vindicator, although I know nobody would actually confuse the two what with the wings. Some blue, being the color of the sky, would seem appropriate anyway.

Angel’s colors were changed because the Powers That Were decided the Champions already having Ghost Rider and the Black Widow meant there was “too much black”.

Times change!

Now I have an imaginary scene with Ghost Rider and Black Widow scowling at Angel in his Neal Adams costume and him saying 'okay okay, I'll switch to red then, happy now?'

It looks like earlier in the Champions (looking at #7) he had a clunky red and yellow outfit showing his chest, and with a headband... ecch.

*******

So they keep him red in a group that already had characters that had
red and/or yellow in theirs...

You want smart?

Remember, initially they put him back in one of his older costumes. Fans complained, so Neal’s came back—red.

As Angel (NOT Archangel), he's only had two costumes I can think of that I didn't like: the graduation costume that looked as if he had suspenders, and the red and yellow one he had at the beginning THE CHAMPIONS series. Though in the latter case, it was more the color scheme than the design.

Neal Adams' costume for Angel was...how to say this...perfect. Especially the boots. They looked like real boots, not "comic book boots."

So of course the boots were the first thing to go.
