I was doing an image search for JB's art and came across a scan of the original cover art for "Uncanny X-Men" #139. I noticed margin notes asking for Angel's outfit to be colored blue:

Obviously that didn't happen, and red was used instead.

Also, I see JB's intent was for Kitty's school outfit to be white in the chest area.

JB, do you know why your suggestions were not implemented?

Those notes are mostly not mine. The only one in my handwriting is on the right, about Wolverine, and only the first part.

The very fact that color codes are included indicate those notes aren't mine. Never did learn those!!

My note about Wolverine makes me think of all the times colorists have “corrected” my art by adding hues that had nothing to do with what I’d drawn.

One example—which, happily, none of you saw—was a GENERATIONS II cover that had “my” Supergirl and Robin. Despite Supergirl having heavy black shading on her hair, the colorist gave her yellow highlights, and despite Robin’s hair being “open”, the colorist made it blue.

Something similar happened in a Storm/Black Panther backup I illustrated for an X-MEN annual. A White bad guy had hired an assassin to kill Ororo, and despite my giving him a narrow, pinched face and an open crewcut, the colorist gave brown skin and blue hair. (Trying to make a character’s hair black by coloring it blue NEVER works!)

Editors have to take the blame for a lot of this, of course.

That black and white page has so much more impact than the color page! Also, why did you even bother drawing anything in the first few panels when it could have just been filled up by the script? (:

Just for fun, I wanted to see how the X-Men cover would look if I followed the notes on the side and colored it myself. Here is the result...

Thanks, Paul. I noticed I forget to color Storm's bracelet, though. Whoops!

Kitty's look in that shot makes me think of DOOM PATROL.

Well done, Matt.
Interesting look behind the scenes. I can see though, why they went with the cover as it is. This version is a bit weak on the warm color side.

Oliver, thanks for the compliment.

As far was warm colors go, I feel one reason a blue Angel would have looked better is that there was already a lot of red and yellow in the team's outfits. When I colored the Angel per the notes suggestions, the chracter seems to pop out more. I think blue would have been better.
